My band and I just finished recording our first demo on the Tascam 488 (not the MkII) and we have to mix it. This is fine but there's no mid EQ on the damn machine! We can do without it but it would be nice. Our bass player says it would give everything a little more clarity. Of course, being a klutz with all things EQ, I didn't think of this when I bought it. Any suggestions?

By the way, our demo sounds great! You're always going to have some buzz on analog but it's so much cheaper!

You can try to add an outbound eq between your recorder and mixdown deck. It is better to add the eq during the mixdow stage instead of the recording stage. Good luck and happy recording.

snakeybus does the 488 have inserts over the tracks where you could insert an external EQ ??

John Sayers -- I don't think there's anywhere you can insert an external EQ. The 488 only has a jack insert for each track and that's it. There is an effects send and return facility -- there's no way I can use that, is there?
And JC Lives -- that's a good idea.
Thanks for the replies.

snaky,

You can install an external EQ by going from the effects send jack on the back of the 488 to the input of the EQ, and from the output of the EQ to the stereo inputs (9/10) on the 488. Then, rather than assigning the track you want to EQ to one of the groups, the signal is routed to the EQ using the effects send control of that mixer strip. Adjust the effects send master and the level conrtol for the return channel to about 2 o'clock. Assign the the EQed signal to the group you want using the assign switches for the return channnel (9/10). The only problem with this is every channel you route through the EQ this way will be EQed the same. Since there are 2 effects sends, you could have 2 different channels of EQ, but there's no way to individually EQ each of the 8 channels.

Or as JC says, you can EQ the entire mix by just installing the EQ between the 488 and your mixdown deck.

Good Luck
