Hi folks!

I haven't been around in a while, finally got some music up on mp3.com.

Here is what I'm using.

For vocals: rode nt2 into an art mp, into a nano compressor ( junk I know) A new compressor is in my future. OOOHHH that Avalon.... someday perhaps.

Drums, bass, and other synth like stuff: Boss Dr. 5 I have recently been working with a fantastic percusionist, and am happy to not be using the Dr. 5.

Guitar: POD, there are a few tracks on the CD where I use a Fender Hot Rod Deville 4 x 10 miced with the rode. I plan on using more of that combo in the future.

I record everything direct to an Adat Lx20, choosing to bypass the board. I prefer a minimum amount of junk in the signal path. Can you say control freak? I really notice a big diference with the POD, it sounds waaaay better when you go direct to tape.
I master everything to a Tascam Cd-RW700 with a little nanoverb, which I plan on replacing.

This is an eclectic mix of tunes. My wife writes and sings. There are also 4 guitar instrumentals on the Cd.

Here it is! Feedback welcome.

Jason....no need to make excuses about your nano, nanosss....you use what you've got...
that aside;
I'm listening to "shelter"
nice gtr tone, actually, and your wife's voice is very nice.
about the recording....
what's that little humming going on in the beginning.,?? sounds like your providing notes for your wife to start on (like she really needs 'em). The use of the vocal dbl tracking is a little weird, because it is unision, and the effect works, but when you go back to the solo voice, it sounds like it drops off a little. I hear that a lot, and I do it myself too....but for some reason, the effect doesn't seem to "add" ...but rather kinda detract...for some reason. Maybe if the dbl tracked vocals where the same volume as the solo voice, it'd work...but the vocal volume seems to go up as well. Plus, the stereo panning kinda moves around...especially when she hits a note "right on"...and it sounds like a mono source...then it splits back..panned wide again, when her dbl'd tracks aren't as accurate.
The song is decent enough, but lacks a TRUE chorus, and/or a bridge.... It is the same chord riff all the way thru, and after awhile, that becomes a problem.
I'd also turn the gtr lead up too...to at least match the vocal level.
Overall...pretty decent, but maybe consider some of these points.

I listened to all three. Goin' Down, the guitar need to come up and forward. The vocals are good but There's a spot or two where it goes out just a bit.
Shelter was the best of the three IMHO. Again the guitar needs to come up. The vocal double works well on this tune.
Belladonna, crank them guitars!
Good work.

Thanks alot for the responses guys!
Good advice is hard to come by here in the frozen tundra.

mixmkr,
the humming is from the backup track of myself that I scrapped. She wanted me to leave it on, so I did. I didn't put my vocal tracks on there because I'm still getting used to the idea of singing and playing. If I can't do it convincingly live, I don't want it on the record. Gives a guy a whole new respect for guys like Stevie Ray. How does he do that?! I mean, he doesn't just do it, he fucking does it!
Since we recorded this she has come up with an octave that sounds better I think. I know what you mean about the panning thing. They were both panned hard right and left but, the voice seems to do strange things when ya start layering. I had zero experience recording / mastering vocals before this, and it's a bitch! Before that it was only instrumental. Since then I have also learned that the solo should be at least as loud as the vocal.
To be honest, I don't see what ya mean about a TRUE chorus and bridge. They seem distinct to me, and the guitar riff is similar but, certainly not the same. The verse/chorus is minor, and the bridge/ end is major.

Track Rat,

This was the first time working with a singer, and my wife at that!
I tried not to step on her toes, held back on the guitar a bit ( too much?) an old keyboard player I'm working with calls that " toxic politeness" hee hee. I'm glad you guys want to hear em louder.

Charva,

There are two rhythm guitars.
She won't leave me for a runt like that.
I got the big ten inch!

Thanks guys!

Shelter

I'm going to have to strongly agree with the previous comments, good tune but you MUST raise that rhythm guitar. You don't really notice until the vocals start, then the vocals are so loud, like in the doubled chorus, where's the gtr? I do like the song and her voice.... I listened to "down for the last time" also and the vocals are tooo loud IMOP. I like her voice though, and the guitar is good.

good tunes:cool:

 Just listened to "Belladonna" and I liked it, nice guitar.
