I just got a Roland ED PC-300 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller from my friend, and I'm wondering what software/additional hardware do I need to record from it onto my computer?

you need integrated software synthesizer and recording application. something like cakewalk or cubase. either one support recording midi and audio, and can play softsynth.

I gave you only hints, but i am not expert about them, (please don't point further questions about them on me) :D mybe AlChuck or James Argo will explain for you. Thank you. :)

youngid. it would be helpfull if you listed your pc confign.
you need a pc - preferably over 1ghz for lots of audio and midi work with a sound card with audio in and out and midi in and out. or i see your using usb then you need a usb port on your computer.
a package i highly recommend for midi and audio work is powertracks at pgmusic.com. its 29 bucks. go to the forums at pgmusic and there are tons of pros there who helped me in the past. look under powertracks forum.
you can also download the demo. powertracks lets you record anything you want to. midi tracks, audio tracks, and scads of other features.
like tons if effects like chorus,echo,reverb,eq....midi notation...and a slew of midi features i dont have space to write about. its the best. ive used it for years. another i like is magix music studio now just relesed as 2005 edition.
i have both pkges and i'm well set with software for songwriting for years on end. total cost less than hundred bucks.

you'll need a synth module to trigger the sounds you want, software to record your midi, and speakers or headphones to listen. you can find a synth module around the web for $100 or more. the more money, the better and more sounds you'll get. Windows does have general sounds that comes with it, but they sound pretty bad. as far as software, pretty much any program that says it will record midi can work. but if you really want to tweak your midi recordings to make it sound better...again, the more money you'll have to spend. Just search these forums for some good advice as far as programs. Looks like the people who responded to you already have some good ideas on that. Good luck.

the new powertracks version out includes support for dxi synths.
plenty of freebies around. the magix includes synths and drum machines as well. so you dont need to buy necessarily a outside hardware synth.
tho' one advantage if you do is less load on your pc processor.

Informations above are all cool :) Now, what's your soundcard anyway? Creative's cards is well-known as MIDI friendly card because it supports soundfonts and has MIDI port, but it doesn't support "true" ASIO, nor GSIF driver. It's okay (and cheap) for begginer, but if you decide to use softsynth / soft sampler alot in the future, you're gonna need decent soundcard as it will give you lower latency & much more posibility of sampling work.
