What do i need auidio interface/mic preamp or else to make my vocals sounds great!

Hi to all forum mates,

I record on DAW (Computer). Is it the audio interface, mic preamp or just the preamp or else that helps one to make exclusively the vocals sounds great when recording on DAW.

If one of the above is suggested will be fine!!!

If audio interfaces how about the following:-

Tascam US-122 USB Audio/MIDI Interface (4 channels sufficient for me)
Behringer UCA202 U Control USB Audio Interface

What is phantom power supply and will it work on the mentioned usb's and does this has some importance when recording vocals?

You need an audio interface it come with built in mic preamps in the form of xlr connection. Yes you need phantom power supply to transmit electrical voltage to make the mic work.

To make the vocal great..depends on a lot of things.. room treatment, mic position, all sorts of things combine. There is no easy and simple answer. You have to practice and practice.

Your interface is fine. The secret to good recording is a good microphone. You can go spend $1000 and buy a Neumann mic or you can by a cheap MXL990 and have it modified by Michael Joly, John Bonnell or a myriad of other modders out there. I have had two MXL 603S modded and they sound excellent (John Bonnell). I also have an MXL R40 modded by Michael Joly. The results have been so impressive I sent my MXL V63M to Michael Joly to be modded.

What I used to do is use the cheap mics and then try and throw in some compression or reverb and a bunch of other things to make them sound acceptable but always falling short. When I use the modded mics all I do is normalize them and add pitch correction and I'm ready to go.

Your Tascam US-122 is an excellent interface. I have a Tascam US 144 and have had no issues with it. It works great. They are very similar.

I also have a comparison of the mics you can listen too in the microphone area. For some reason the AKG sounds better on this post than it does on my recording on my computer.

Phantom power is 48 volts and is used on condenser mics. They won't run without it. Condenser mics are best for recording generally but I have found, for my voice, a ribbon mic works well. Never have the phantom power on for any mics other than a condenser mic. Condensers pic up pretty much everything. Ribbons tend to be warm sounding and have more bass. If you have your Tascam US 122 you should use a mic that plugs into it. If you are using a USB mic you aren't using your computer interface at all. The computer interface is simply an external sound card designed for recording. The mic should be connected to the interface which is connected to the computer.
