Due to the extreme intelligence of those in this forum I recently purchased my fist condenser mic (mxlv67) and I love it, and enjoying it very much. However my son knowing I was looking for a condenser mic came across what he said was a very good deal. He is a good guitar player but knows less about mics than me. His buddy said it was a very good deal. The mic is an Alesis AM51.

Opinions please!!!

what is the going price. (Claims he got a steal new at a guitar center in NY)
and more importantly how do you renowned experts rate it. The only thing I would use it for is vocals and acoustic guitar.

The flat out best way (imho) to see what a mic is about is to record the voice or instrument with two or more mics at the same time and stick them into the mix.
I've done this many times with my few decent vocal mics and still am finding surprises, with what works, and what didn't sound like I thought it should have.

It's an Alesis Groove Tubes AM-51. Cardiod condensor large diaphram mic. I've got a AM-52 which is the multi pattern (cardiod, omni and figure 8) version. It's a decent mic. I usually use mine in figure 8 for M/S stuff. How much did he pay?

that is the steal of the century if it is really new, and not "b" stock.....either way, im not sure it will give you a better sound than the v67 but it wont hurt to try.....

That would be about 1/3 the going rate. Granted mine is the model up from the 51 but I paid $500. He did REAL good.
