I am a songwriter and want to record. for myself and for quite a few other people. i have about 2500 dollars to blow on recording gear. i dont need monitors or mics. whats the best thing for my money? also, i want to get sounds that aren't professional but are really good for demos. i know this is very vague but im looking for any help i can get.

thanks
steven

If you don't need monitors and mics that means that you already have some gear, what have you got so far?

Are you interested in computer recording or stand alone, how many tracks do you think you will need?

....

id rather get something i can edit with on the computer. im about to purchase a laptop but i want advice first. but i want advice that is no way prejudiced to my opinions (computers, 8 tracks.... so on) so just say what you think is best, generally speaking.

Most of the comments you get will be biased, so you'll really need to study the pros/cons of each and decide what is right for you. It sounds like you're probably less interested in every single aspect of recording than in making good demos as simply as possible. If that's the case, a PC or HD standalone would be best for you. I've found HD standalone in combination with PC for editing to be the best combination for me.
