Got
"the Following File Cannot Be Located" message

For two existing projects I had. When I tried to open them.

It said
"C:\Prog files\cakewalk\cakewalk home studio 2002\audio data\RC110g8KF.wav" couldn't be found. It gave me the same sequence of messages for another project . (probably different numbers).

Then another box popped up and it said
"some external audio files could not be found, missing audio data will be replaced with silence". But I don't have any external drive or anything.

So the projects had all the tracks and Effects all like original, but with a flatline for every track.

Needless to say I'm crushed. Is this work all really gone?

A few minutes before I had done a "compact audio data" on another third project I'm working on. That project re-opens fine. I had also done the "Clean Audio disk" command too and said "yes to all" Then I re-started my computer. These actions had never wiped anything out before.

What did I do? How can I get back all that stuff?

I just emailed Cakewalk support but,
Has any of you had this happen before ?

Thanks alot

I lost my first album this way (had to redo everything, most of my stuff is audio not midi) :( But I used Cleansweep (the demo :o ) Never, NEVER, use tools like that! Sincerely hope you didn't....

See if you can find the files manually, check the disc or folder to see if it's empty (which it was in my case), if it is empy you're screwed. Do nothing with that disc until you've downloaded a program like undelete. Try to rescue the files with such program.

Good luck, man!

I just looked up the .wav files in Windows Search and found 322 files that for some reason now are "WINAMP Media file" (s).
Is that supposed to be? They span the dates of the recording of these two projects I think I've lost. The newest project I'm working on now- which is fine, is not on this search result list. I started it after the last date on the list.

The last date of these .wav files also corresponds to the date that I had a tech support guy from Edirol help me re-install my driver

Are these clues I can do something with??

Thanks

Wav-files are often associated with a mediaplayer of some sort. That isn't the problem.

You can safely play the files to check whether these are the files you're looking for. You can use the CWAF tool (audio finder by Cakewalk) to see what's happening here.

Did you do a search for a specific file Cakewalk can't find? RC110g8KF.wav for instance?

Sorry Alanfc, but I think Pedullist is right! The files are gone, start over and record from scratch...

I use Partition Magic by Power Quest to seperate my HD into a C and a D drive, and keep backups of any current projects on the D drive.

Using the Folder-per-Project option and burn the whole folder is a great way of backing up (IMHO)... ;)

No no, first try undelete!

I lost 4Gb back then, btw.

A great suggestion.;)

And it's faster than Bundles, and easier to use (say if you just want a particular wav file in the project...)

Woo hoo I fixed it

Hey just had to tell every Newbie or anyone who may have this problem ! I got all my stuff back! Using the Cakewalk Audio Finder download from advice here.
Dayyum... I Just recovered about 100+ hours of work. Its interesting, even the stuff thats only a month old that I recovered sounds bleccchh- too many effects. My standards have changed alot already.
From now on I only save .BUN's ! And I have fine BUNS at that. (sorry I had to say it).
Now on to educating myself on external drives and proper backup routines. Not going through this again.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

That's how I do it too, it makes life a little easier..

Using the Folder-per-Project option is Sonar only right?

I have Cakewalk HS XL--

Thanks

Bummer.... :(

I bought a Firewire bay & a 3rd harddisk for backup purposes only....40Gb in 10 minutes....:D

Far as I know it is only Sonar 2.0.

Mighty good news! Really great to hear!

When I lost my stuff it was really, REALLY, gone. I had to start from scratch :(

I'm so glad for you!

Your experience exactly matches mine. The neat project saving command is enough to make me want to upgrade to Sonar from HS2002 by itself:)
