What are you all doing......

I was hoping not too, that was the point of a send/return on each track.

But if I have too...
all I would really need is a mixing board with out's on each track. I would then use the xlr to record and the out's to send to my computer.

when I mix I would go from the outs of my computer to the xlr in's of my board and then use the main outs on my board back to my computer and record my mixdown on another track on my computer

Is this right?

then I have to buy/make a patch bay...but maybe i'll never get away from that...is that what you are saying?

>>>>I like busses because I can get a drum mix and then bring the levels up and down, same with vocals, guitars and bass. Just makes life easier...I've used it while doing live mixing, and it's very nice. you could just move all the faders with your hand, but it's not as easy. Like I said...not SET on it.

Yup. That was what I was trying to explain in my earler post (the one where that guy slammed me :) If you had an extra set of tracks, you could leave the outs from the MOTU plugged into the board. Use the left side of the mixer for tracking, the right side for mixing. Big ol' pain in the ass.

If you can use the returns from the MOTU to the Mackie and avoid having to repatch, great. In that case, you'd have to get/make 'Y' cables from the pre's to the Mackie's in, and from the MOTU to the Mackie out (just for the 4 tracks you'd be using the pre's for).

if you have a source hooked up to only the "receive" part of the mixing board will anything play? or does it have to be hooked up to one of the inputs?

To be honest, I'm not sure. My mixer works a bit differently than the Mackie's do, and it probably varies from mixer to mixer. There are a bunch of VLZ pro users around here - somebody wanna jump in?

Hey guys, that Mackie board you're talking about will work to record up to 16 discreet channels at a time!

Use the 8 direct outs for critical level adjustment material, and the inserts for all the non critical instruments!

In that case, you'd have to get/make 'Y' cables from the pre's to the Mackie's in, and from the MOTU to the Mackie out (just for the 4 tracks you'd be using the pre's for).

Don't make no Y cables! Most Mic-Pre's have two outputs, put one to the recorder/soundcard, one to the mixer.

Y cables do funny things to signal impedance!

P.S. I would be using a moto24 (is the software that comes with it any good?)
It doesn't come with any PC software. I assume that's what you're using since you said you were using NTrack.

I am using N-track.

I went to the moto website to check it out, and I saw some software, so I assumed it came with it...if it doesn't oh well

Does anyone know if it works with n-track?

Are you aware that the 24 I/O has 24 ins and 24 outs, not 12 in's and 12 outs?

Just wondered because in your posts back and forth it sounded like you thought it had only 12 ins & outs.:)

The software it comes with is for Mac, not PC. It does come with sw though. Anyway, there's no reason why it wouldn't work with n-track. N-track works with ASIO, WDM, and MME drivers, and MOTU products ship with ASIO and WDM.

Hey sae... I just saw this thread. I was over at the Mackie website, and there are some guys doing some serious complaining about one side of their mains distorting and cutting out on the 1604VLZs. It seems to be happening after six months or so. They think it's a problem Mackie is aware of, and is adressing. I have a 1404VLZ and am very happy with it, but I realize you're looking for more flexibility. You might want to check out what those guys are saying anyway. Hope this helps.

I have two 1604VLZ Pros. No problems with either ever.
