What are some good....

I need a mixer with direct outs for my 1010lt. What are some of the cheaper ones out there.

How many inputs/outputs do you need?
What is your budget (define "cheaper")?
Do you need phantom power?

I bought a Yamaha MG12/4 which has 6 mic inputs, 4 inserts (which can be used as "direct outs"), and phantom power. Runs about $150-$200.
Also, check out the Yamaha MG10/2, which has only 2 mic inputs, 2 inserts, phantom power and runs about $100.

My budget is around 300. What is phantom power? I need atleast 6 pres with six outs for each individual channel. So i can track six serparte channels at once.

If you need six direct outs or at least two extra stereo busses, you're talking about well more than $300 unless you can find a used one on eBay...

That Carvin mixer has no direct outs and only a single stereo output bus.

But this one has four busses plus the regular stereo bus, so there's six channels for you.

With only six and all tied up with routing instruments to the computer, there's no bus left to monitor from. So I guess that won't cut it for you either unless you track with phones...

Uh, yup, of course... I was thinking about my own goofball setup where I have two soundcards, a Delta 66 and a SB Live, and so I also use my mixer to intercept the sound card outs and combine them through the main bus and then out to the speakers. With a single soundcard, one can indeed just route the soundcard outs directly to a power amp (or powered monitors). In fact, it's probably better - less circuitry in the signal path.

I prefer running the monitor signal through the mixer. You can adjust volume easily and you don't need to turn on the computer just to hear something. You also have a lot more options for creating a good monitor mix.

Phantom power is used for condensor microphones that need a 48v charge before they can output a signal. If your mic doesn't come with it's own power then you must have an external source. Most mixers come with it, but make sure what ever one you get has it. You may not need it now, but someday you will.
