what are options for soundcard? top of the line and least expensive - any ideas.

I'll give a shout out for a MOTU 828mkII or an 896HD.
The 828mkII was my choice, as I prefer to use various out-board preamps instead of the ones offered in the unit itself.

Another good choice would be a RME Fireface 800.

Least expensive options would be in the form of USB but I wouldn't recommend it.
