I've read a few software reviews of sequencers, and a couple of times I've seen words to the effect a piece of software is pretty darn good, but lacks "advanced features" of a top-of-the-line Cubase or PR or Sonar.

OK, what are the most "advanced features?"

Thank you.

Well, here's a few features that are generally available only in higher end products:

1. Advanced non-destructive audio editing (eg, time-warp)
2. Effective noise reduction / audio restoration
3. Surround sound capability
4. Advanced routing (eg, to external hardware devices)
5. Video editing
6. Blue book CD mastering
7. MIDI bells and whistles which I know nothing about (I'm strictly audio)
8. Normally more and better bundled plug-ins (effects)
9. More and / or better included synths and / or samplers

If you don't need all that stuff, then it's pointless and a waste of money going for the top-end version of the software, unless to impress your friends. Most importantly, the audio engine in Audacity (free) is as good as Cubase 4 (loadsa money).

Frankly, I don't know if I would ever need 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9, or not.

I have about 3/4 decided to buy Cubase SE3, but I don't get my gear until Xmas. Would Audacity keep up with SE3?
