Just sounds close mic'd and tonky to me. Maybe even a sample mixed in.

tonky?

it sounds unnatural and really really hard like it's got some messed up compression setting. Extremely high ratio??? I don't know.....

Can someone with much better ears explain that compression?

I listened, but couldn't tell much. I only hear quality loss due to the MP3 conversion. I listened a few more times, but still can't tell, so guess I was no help. Is there a higher bitrate version of this song? (I don't know if it is yours, or you were just listening to it)

What you are hearing is the sound of that particular snare rather than compression settings im sure.Sounds like it has been tuned pretty tight. Not sure about the compression settings.

YEAH, really tight tuning, I didn't think about that. Thanks.

Sounds like a pretty smallish snare, tuned tight. The mic is pointing more towards the rim, I'd guess (not much attack, but lots of pitchy tone), probably run through a limiter, to bring up that ring body stuff. Again, not much attack, but since it's tight and high, it doesn't sound too bad.

I recorded a band not too long ago that had like an 8" snare, tuned real high. It came out alright, though I used an MK219, rather than the SM57, and did do some heavy limiting to get it to sound a little more full and less like a frying pan.

Okay, maybe I'm missing the point with this genre of music. Is it me or do other people have trouble understanding the lyrics too? I didn't catch a freakin' word the dude was saying.

I hope it is only my hearing going bad from too much loud rock.
