it seems there is a weird hype thing going on about these wharfedales. i need to hear some educated statements about these speakers from anyone that actually has something else to compare them to and has plenty of experience with other studio monitors.

i also don't think deepwater uses these wharfedales to mix. he owns a shitload of nice equipments, i'm sure he is going to use a pair of real monitors that is way beyond our price range. he sells these things, i can't rely on any of his statements and you shouldn't either.

please don't leave comments here about the wharfedales if you have no experience with other monitors because it's not helpful at all, you are simply convincing other gullible people to buy this product not realizing what they're really getting into. a lot of statements from people have been "they appear nice" "they sound nice". think about that for a second. monitors are not supposed to sound nice in the first place.

i'd like to hear from harvey what he thinks about these monitors as he has experience with other monitors.

I mentioned my first impressions in this big thread:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=123752

My posts are in that thread are:#192, 195, 199, 201, and 203.

Basically, they're very smooth, with some woofiness around 400 to 600Hz, but have great imaging and enough bottom end to make some reasonable mixing decisions using them. These comments are about the 8.2 passive speakers; haven't heard the actives yet.

I do use Wharfedale to mix with and I don't really have that nice of a setup.

Here's whats in my studio/home office

1 Alesis HD24
1 Behringer DDX3216
1 M-audio Tampa
1 KRK RP8 (pair) (soon to be sold since I always use my 8.2A)
1 Wharfedale 8.2A (pair)
1 Audix OM5
1 Audix OM3
1 AKG 2000B
1 Lexicon MPX500
1 Yamaha AW16G (I just bought)

I'm a live sound contractor not a pro studio owner. Now my portable live sound rig is very nice.

I might have a little experience using several monitor sets...

I've gone through probably a dozen sets - in this room - over the last few years trying to find out what gives me the best performance in a "accurate vs. real-world" situation.

The only ones that I'm left with now are my B&W M802 SIII's and my Wharfedale Diamond (original series, but I digress) 8.2's (as noted in this photo). IMHO, they not only sound good "for the money" - They just sound good, period.

As Harvey mentioned in his posts, they do have a certain "richness" in the mids that takes a little getting used to. However, I found that particular anomaly to be a "plus" to be exploited as opposed to a "problem" to be overcome.

I don't have a fraction of the experience of the three previous posters, but at a more prosaic level I switched from Alesis MKII to the original W'dale hi-fi Diamond 8.2 (at John's suggestion) and the difference was just....staggering. Yup, even I could hear it :)

Whats with the I am so smart S.M.R.T. type post. Just pm Harvey and ask him instead of pretending your saving the poor and guilable from a bad purchase and dropping names like your king shit.

In all fairness you must understand that he probably wanted some unhyped opinions for himself and for the others out there. He wasn't trying to say everyone who has been excited about these speakers has no clue what they are doing. I have a pair and I can tell you that I like them, but everyone has to agree that these monitors are being hyped like Gods among monitors right now. I am going to say that I love them, but my only comparison of them for an extended use is the logitech Z-680 (also released by Alesis as 5.1 monitors). Not in my home studio I have had a little experience with the Alesis MKII's as well as some KRK ST6s and the M-Audio BX5s. My experience with recording is about a year now. So I shouldn't weigh too heavily on anyone's opinion, but I can say they are a huge step up from the Logitech Z-680's There is much more clarity and cleanliness.
