1) why is it a bad idea to use speaker cables for these monitors?

2) how much difference will it make if i use a balanced/unbalanced cable to connect the speakers. is there a way to tell if a plug is balanced or unbalanced just by looking at it? is there such thing as a balanced 1/4 plug?

and one more stupid question..

3) is it a good idea to use microphone cables? i will probably need impedence converters or something?

Here are you answers in order -

1) The speaker wire is to heavy of a cable. There is not enough electrical current to push it through the cable.

2) A balanced cable has 3 wires (i.e. XLR and TRS)

3) If a 1/4 plug has three ring like a stereo cable than it is balanced. I standard 1/4 plug or instrument cable only has 2 sections

so i should get a balanced 1/4 plug with three rings?? when i went to radioshack i dont think they knew hwat i was talkin about... what terms should i use or how should i ask for one? should i just use a regular instrument cable??

If your buying from Radio Shack tell them you want a dual 1/4" stereo cable. If you buy from a music store tell them you want a dual 1/4 TRS cable. If your monitors are within 10' than you can use any cable balanced or unbalanced.

Here is some help for you

Hi Deep Water,

I can't wait to get my monitors!

I just realized an added bonus of going with the actives.

While I have some PC recording programs (FL Studio and some free demo versions of other stuff) and an Echo Darla 24 we only have one family PC and its not in my bedroom where my recording desk is.

With the 8.2 actives I can easily transport and set them up with the PC when I have the house to my self and they can do some dual duty!

Now I have an ethical dilemna...Is it right to sell my Alesis MK 1's? I did get rid of both of my 3630 comps (used gear store) so I guess I may trade them in for something at GC like some bass or guitar strings:)

My wharfies weren't broken! hehehe it's the amp. These speakers apperently are really tough to break...

g.
*good day*

LOL!! Just give them a proper retirement. Its not their fault they where design poorly,

I'm going to join the club and purchase the 8.2a's sometime in the next month or so.

great! they had less noise than the speaker cables i had used previously.

does anyone else have a problem with the speakers "popping" really loud when shutting down, restarting, and turning on the computer?

The pop is probably from your soundcard when it's powering up. Just turn the Wharfey's on last.

Yeah - in some studios you'll find the monitors on a different plug to everything else, they get turned on last and off first. And perhaps have them down when you're turning on and off Phantom power, depending on how your mixer behaves.

OK, my turn to ask a question. Anyone using a sub with their Wharfedales? I've been thinking about geting one even though the low end response in the 8.2's is pretty sweet. Any reco's?

I've sold about 3 people a KRK RP10 sub to go with their 8.2A and have heard good things. Drop me a PM if you want to go that route

Thanks, deepwater, I'll do that. I was just researching that sub and it looks soild. I've heard good things about KRK, too.
