the lie is alive

ok so this is my first time putting a song up for you guys to tear apart... so have at it, I can take it(I think!). I've only been recording for a little over a year so I may have some stupid mistakes, gotta let me know, it's the only way i'll learn.

thought #1 is that the chorus guitars aren't heavy enough, that they don't jump out quite as I'd like 'um to, but my bandmates disagreed with me, so now it's up to you guys. anyways, let me know what you think.

thought #2 is that the chorus vox need to be redone. this will happen when we don't have a gig and I don't have something else to record.

thank you all...
wes

PS let me know if that link doesn't work. it's a .wav; if you want a fast download, it's here

The page you tried to access does not exist on this server.

etc.

Edit: Ok, 3rd edit. The wav file works now. I sleep before I post anymore :D

I made the mp3 downloadable, the other link should be fixed now, too, but it's a wav, so it's pretty big. thanks for looking!

Ok, I just listened to the wav file. I'm listening on headphones because it's so late, so keep that in mind.

Overall, I think the recording is very well done. I agree with you about the guitars in the chorus. They really lack power when they come in. It sounds like the verse guitars are mixed louder than the chorus, which could be part of the problem.

The vocals all sound very nice, though you might consider cutting some of the effects at the very end, it doesn't really match the rest of the song, in my opinion.

I really liked the song, sorry I can't be more helpful. Thanks for sharing!

i like the chuggin feel of the guitars in the chorus, it's kinda unique, they could use a little more meat though. betta watch out for that OWA.........he's comin to get ya, lol.

I listened to the mp3. I'd like to hear more guitar, but I also like loud, nasty guitar, so just my opinion on that. Song is pretty cool. Well written and performed. Has a cool, moody vibe, and flows togehter pretty well.

Hi

I like the song a lot, nice vocals and guitars in the verse. What is your guitar setting for the verse, acoustic on one side and electric on the other ?

Thanks,

/Jack Real.

Good tune, very good tune. The verses sound just great! Good balance, good tone and accuracy on the vocals.

On the choruses however... I don't think it's a matter of volume on the distortion guitar(s), it's just that they sound kind of choked. If you can retrack that guitar, back down the amound of gain on the amp and try bringing the highs up a bit to give it better definition and a more expansive sound. Keep in mind that amps almost ALWAYS need less gain when tracking than you would use live.

Is that really 36 megs?

Man, I don't have that kinda time this morning.

sorry...off I go to the studio...

Thanks,

the verse is clean guitars on either side, parker fly through a mesa nomad and an ibanez jem through a different channel of the same amp. both neck position. close mic'd with a 414 and a tlm 103 room mic.

i don't remember how I did the extra stuff in the verses though.

Cool...

Wow.. man good tune. Really well written. Reminds me of Vertical Horizon or something along those lines.

The only thing about the guitars during the chorus is that maybe you could dial in some mids. You got some nice low end there where you can "feel" it, but it's just lacking just a little something to put it in your face.

The highhat during the chorus is little bit too loud.

.....But seriously dude...I mean if you walked away from this right now without changing a thing- definitely nothing to be ashamed of!!

Great job

Groovy stuff. I think it accomplishes its goal.
Well done.

You should make some of the other songs downloadable.

thanks man

not cool enough for your signature, though, I see. :p :D

I have new mixes/recordings for the others coming so I don't want to make um downloadable yet, otherwise people would have crappy versions of them around...

Good writing. Really good singing and nicely recorded. Agree that more contrast in the intensity of the guitars during the chorus would add to it.

Thanks for posting.

no one has anything harsher for me? :p

maybe i'm being a bit ambitious, but c'mon, bring it on!

ok then........I don't like the tone of the snare and the verse guitar is boring.......how's that

You sound like a little b1tch!

:D

JK I liked it. I'd pull some verb off the vox as well as put some stank on your chorus vocals. Guitars get nice and meaty but your vocals stay pretty mello.
Good song!

~R

ps- next time compress the song to MP3 ;)

better, I was thinking of adding some leads to the verses... I hate my drummer's piccilo snare, it just feels weak to me most of the time.

I'll experiment with some different stuff in the chorus vox, too. thanks!

Re: Sweet Afton

Sounds really good.

Agree on the chorus guitar sounds a bit muddy.

As for the vocals:
You could try to sing less on the vowels and more on the consonants.

But that's only my opinion.

Good luck with your music.

It likes some punch and not open. I think you might have it over compressed.
