Weight of large console

I have the opportuniy to buy a nice 24 track console.
It's quite large tho, and I hear that the weight is about 180lbs which is something like 40 sacks of potatoes in metric.

This is now concerning me a little.
Apparently the desk takes 3 people to carry. The trouble is that my studio is at the top of my house and I'm worried about the weight up there. Should I be concerned? It also means I have to get it up 2 flights of stairs somehow!

Has anyone else been in this situation or have any suggestions about the practical side of large consoles?

80kg isn't that heavy. Two strong movers should be able to handle it. It's lighter than an upright piano, or the cast iron clawfoot tub I moved upstairs! :eek:

Seriously, if you need help call a piano mover, they will appreciate the delicate nature of musical equipment.

You needn't worry about the ability of your house to bear the weight. I mean, it will have a larger footprint than a 80kg person . . .

I have no idea what people actually weigh in kg but my friends tend to be very skinny anyway so I bet they weigh nothing! ;)

Hopefuly we can get it up the stairs. I'll have to see what it looks like! I'm a bit scared about how big it might be in real life. It looked relatively small (as these things go) in the photo till I saw how tiny the rack modules next to it looked and I realised something was wrong! ;)

Depends on the console, but they consume alot of $$$ in electricity. The older consoles don't take kindly to moving and you really have to be carefull or you will be forever in debugging all the associated problems that can occur (connectors/boards/powersupply line coming lose of broken).

What make of board is it?
 
Do you think that older consoles have just settled into their home and hate being moved or that they were more fragile from the get go? Just curious?

Hmmm Power consumption is a good point. I didn't even think about potential operating costs! I'm assuming that it would still consume less than 500 watts?
It all adds up tho and you make a really valid point what with the way things are going with energy costs.

The console is only a soundtracs MRX, not a Neve or anything so I'm embarressed to tell you now but you know these things are relative. :)

With older consoles you run the risky dry solder joints and leaky capacitors and other signs of old age, so shifting it around may shake up these cobwebs a bit. But if you can get it up there ok, go for it. You say 'only' a Soundtracs MRX, but a quick Google search will reeal that they are highly regarded.

As for power. . . maybe it consumes a bit compared to more contemporary consoles . . . so what? If it consumes 500 watts, just turn off five lights!

I've read a few threads about this desk, some of them complaining about reliability issues and possibly some indication that the PSU might be underspecced or something. Personally I like the soundtracs sound (I have a tiny Topaz). I just meant it's all relative.

...but I'm dead excited! I just have to get it here. :)
