Thanks, everyone: Erland, Hevy, Boydrj, Slack, Sam, M.Brane, groucho, studioviols, Pedullist, sloop, Sluice, songbird, MC Gitarz, TripleM, skids, Ghost of FM. Lt Bob and Khompewtur.

Okay, I'm convinced. I learn slow, yeah, but messages get through to me eventually sometimes. The Fruity Loops sounds suck. Skids called the string sound in this one 'keyboard tinniness' and that about sums it up. I've taken a lot of the advice in this thread and applied it to the synth strings. A bit more work on the EQ and I'll repost it.

Thanks everyone. :)

Agreed w/Sam... definitely a Christmas carol =) Hark the Herald Angel blows a Mouth Trumpet

You know, at first... back about 10 months ago... I'll admit I really didn't consider your stuff too interesting... but after repeated listens, your style really solidifies and the honesty rings out.... the stuff resonates... it's just as different as a Samicide or a SLuiCe... but in some completely different direction.

The song has two great qualities that the best songs in the clinic have: 1) When listening, all nits about the mix are forgotten... 2) It inspires the listener to record something of his/her own.

Really the only suck part of this is that it requires a ton of concentration to "pick nits", because the song gets me away from "critic" mode.

Thumbs in the upright and locked position...

Really good tune. Great singing and harmonies. Loved the way they came in and out.
I've complemented you many times for knowing how to use synth (ok, Fruity Loops - it's all the same to me;)). I gotta say this time that the strings weren't quite cutting it for me.
I'll compliment you on the "deeper than you'd think" quality this song has. I really did enjoy this and will listen again, but giving my honest opinion, if this was the first I'd heard from you I don't know if I'd like it as much as I did. I think it's those strings.
The harp sound might sit better if it weren't panned so hard left. Just a minor thing.
I think I heard a little pop at 1:24.

participant, frprod - thanks for what you said - I wasn't sure if I would put this one on the album, but comments in the this thread like yours are encouraging, so it's staying on the album.

Okay, I applied (as best as I knew how) a lot of the ideas in this thread, plus I used something I picked up from the Recording Forum a couple of days ago. Here's the result:

It's still called 'weep', but there are some changes...

...if you can be bothered one more time

ps for fprod: "I think I heard a little pop at 1:24"

Nah, it wasn't a little pop. It was a little wine.

Hey Dobro,
...definitely fitting when compared to the rest of your material. This will fit into your cd package just fine. I read Chad's review, and he pretty much nailed it. Critiquing your songs/mixes really is an issue of preference. Nothing you do sounds wrong, and you obviously have great ears. I enjoyed this. ....and yeah, happy like a carol. Nice work man.

Hey, this is better. Much better use of space. Seems more full. Very nice. Strings sound better because they are not so isolated (from what I remember - sorry). The harp moved over as well, correct? A few of the really high strings way out right still seem too tinny, but it is much better and what can you do, it's synth. I would call it done...

and done very well. :)

The wine is at 1:25. The pop is at 1:24. ;)

Much, much better this time around. Strings sound better. Harp sounds better centered. Put it on the album and let me know when it's done!

yes yes yes! MUCH better in the string department. I love how they swell in and out. A million times better. If I didn't know already it's possible I'd think maybe they were actually real strings.

Man, this is the song the whole bar sings together on Christmas eve.:)

Great job, dobro. This one's terrific. And I can see it being a great album closer.

Nice remix! You've really nailed the tone of this thing:

Didn't get to hear the first mix, and my monitors are fifteen miles away..but it sounds like you got it covered. Nice tune dobro, never heard you do any b/g vocals before...keep doing it:) Great song man!

Whew, what a relief! Thank you all very much. Love you guys.

M. Brane - what is that keyboard? A famous old synth?

Enjoyed

I like your style man. Awsome, tell us more about the CD.

Dobro,
I liked this a lot, I guess I haven't really heard a lot of your tunes, but after about a minute or so I expected to hear some ka-chunk rhythm guitar with some screaming leads, you know...the lead vox go up an octave. But you kept it simple and did a damn fine job. Well done!

Your welcome! :)

Here's the link to the whole page: http://www.vintagesynth.org/arp/string.shtml

I had one of those for a while, and really liked the string sounds especially through my old analog flanger. The horn sounds pretty much sucked though, and it was a noisey SOB.
