We All Love Distortion

Interesting review Eddie!

I tried out the TS9 (supposed to be the new TS808). With my gear, I just couldn't get to find any interesting sounds. Means with Epi LP cust, or a Fender strat, through 2 different marshall amps, my old VS8020 and a real-tube one-. On the other end, I tried it with my bud's gear, Fender telecaster, through the aforementionned all-tube marshall, and the sound was straight there!
Of course you could say my bud's gear was better ; but my point here is that the TS9 can be a killer with a given gear, and needs much more twiddling to get your sound on another.
That leads me to another point, about trying out gear in the shop. In the shop, you're only going to play, what 1/2 hour, if the shop-guy is friendly enough to let you. You might miss out your sound, or straight get a nice bluffing sound that make you buy the box, then find that it's quite limited when reach home.
Regarding, the amp distortion. I take it as a great challenge to get the sound just from there. You can get quite a variety of sounds from there. Of course, an external box would bring in more flavour. I like to use my guyatone phaser, play around with it, can change quite a bit the sound, and in correlation with twiddling the amp disto knobs, can do quite a few things.
Similar idea as use the eq to get more options.

Hi Claude,

Thank you for your kind words. So you have a real Tube amp, what is it? a combo or a head with speaker cab. or...?

The TS9 is different from the TS808, use the link and see what Ibanez has to tell you about the subject, I have tried the TS9 the TS9-Turbo and the TS808 and the Turbo can give you the sounds of both the 9 and the 808 and it can go beyond, the 9 is cleaner, I have heard it myself, whereas the 808 is like a valve-amp, a little grainier. Oh yes I know it is all very subjective, personally I like all of those three models, haven't heard anything I do not like, but there are different sounds for different applications.

What you said about the shop and trying out is so true. I usually try to get to know some of the folks in the shops, so they give me some freedom in regards of trying things out. You could of course take your amp and gtr. with you and then try what it is you want to try out. All a little easier if you have a car [which I do not have]

Amp dist.....Well yes nothing beats a good amp,and usually you do not need more than just gtr. and amp., but I try to get those small amps to sound like their bigger brothers and for that purpose pedals work very well.

You said you also had a POD isn't it? Had a pupil once who had one, liked it, but I have only heard a few sounds from it, could't use it for long enough to see what else was in it

What about muli-effectors, do you use them [or anyone else here?] I am still pleased with what individual pedals can give me, and they are so flexable, but have to admit never owned a multi-effect pedal. I guess the tweaking is a little like programming a syth. or a computer.

Catch Ya,

Eddie

Nope, no all-tube amp, and no pod :(
For the all-tube, I tried on my friend's gear. For the pod, I'm studying the idea, since I'm looking for something I can use for recording and that I can use to lead my amp (still my Marshall VS8020) as well.

Of course, I'd prefer the all-tube amp solution, but it's rather expensive, and doesn't give me much on the recording area.

TS808 and TS9, I knew they're different, is it that obvious ... thinking of it I wonder if it wasn't the TS8 (how do you call it -more exact copy of the original 808)...

All right then

Where will you record on Claude comp.? Stand alone digital machines or a porta cassette one........

The jimdunlop link will show you something like a Sansamp which you could use to warm up your amp. talking of Sans. here is the Tech21 link: www.tech21nyc.com So there is so much to choose from. Perhaps a mixer may be enough, just to be able to get some different sounds going into your amp or recorder. Perhaps your recorder has already a build in mixer, so what is it you would like.......

For multi-effects, I tend to think you can loose so much time trying out the too many useless possible configuration. I much rather get a stomp-box, play around with it, line-up a few of them... means really build up the sound from scratch. It makes your sound more personnal, and helps you build that particular skill of using effects!
With computers, it's different. I've tried a bit to play with the VST simulation thing. It can get you to tune your effect a bit like a stomp-box. I wasn't really convinced, but it can be related to my system as well.
The advantage of the mutli-effect is, you just plug your guitar through the thing and you straight get a bluffing sound... if you want to be star of the day, if the audience is no guitar-geek, here you are. I don't think it's anything near what you or me are looking for ! ;)

Want To Be Star Of The Day,With The Money Of The Day.....

Hey man,

Don'y you want to be star of the day, including with all the girls of the day and the money of the day.... :D That must be so much your lucky moment of the day  and then for a while you will be asked to repeat your "Star of the Day Thing" ..................

Well not bad if you look at Oasis [still remeber them?] they can now play whatever they want with whover they would like.........

But yes I do not think the "Star of the Day Thing" would fit us. Think there are not many here, and if they are they have good reasons to be in disguise :D

"...........Well look at me with my big sunglasses noone will really see my face, it is too much of a mess anyway with all that stuff I used last night........"

Hey man, have to leave you here, wouldn't be first time, the library is going to close within half an hour, so I'll guess I'll see you tomorrow. [have't checked my E-mail yet, will have to wait untill tomorrow as well]

See ya,

Eddie :)

Hey, y'all...

I used the Digitech RP50 Modeling Guitar Processor for the guitars in the song on my signature line, recorded direct. I'm really pleased with the distortions available, although I have a lot more exploring to do. It has a very useful tuner.

Distortion

I use a LOT of distortion most of the time. My current rig is a Rocktron Voodo Valve PreAmp, into a Marshall 20/20 Valve Power Amp.

However, I think when it comes to cool, tight punchy distortion, the guitar and pickups can have a big contribution. Specially the output of the pickups.

Boss Pedal Review?

Hello Everyone,

Promised last week a Boss-dist.pedal review, well I will put this one up some time this week as I have not got 'round to doing it yet. I will, for this one, open up a new thread, as some thread loose much of their meaning in the course of a week. Of course feel free to still add your contributions to this one, but the Boss review will be somewhere else!

In the meantime enjoy the Summer [or Winter, depending on where you are on the Globe]

Cheers :)

Eddie
