I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
sooo, the high-quality plugin adoption is about to take place.

i've used the Waves 10day Demo, and from what i could tell, they were great. so what about the UAD?

looking about $1000, which might be the better choice for me?

i understand, the UAD has the Hardware advantage, but they make something for waves now too, for about $600. That's no big deal, *powermac* :D :D

so, who has used both and perferred one over the other?

and i searched, i'm sorry, nothing really helped me much, i'm looking for the black-and-white i-used-both answer.

Okay I've used both and if you want character get the UAD plugins. If you want clean/sterile get the waves. Both are good I prefer UAD.

OK than, it seems unanimous- UAD it is!

people have mentioned that the cards can be somewhat underpowered, will i be able to still have the plugins utilizing my CPU or would i have to get a second card?

UAD plugins will only run on a uad card, but you can still use other plugins that run off your cpu at the same time.

It's more that the newer plugs (Space Echo, Multiband, Plate 140, and especially the Neve stuff) are so ridiculously CPU intensive that the cards run out of power. You can run lots of the lighter plugs like the Pultec and LA2A. And their channel strip stuff is decent and runs on little card CPU.

They are rumoured to be bringing out a newer card sometime  the PCIe was a temporary solution.

As for me, I'm headed towards my third card :o since my PC is four years old and won't support whatever solution they come up with :(

thanks MS and NL5.

i was checking around there site and found a handy chart of plugin instances per card.

so something new is coming up huh?

i'll be looking seriously at it after christmas, so maybe they will announce a due date and i'll wait for it. ;)

i'm just looking for some good, simple compressors, eqs, verbs etc. nothing crazy, i idont even know how to use a multiband!

I have PCIe ports in my Dual G5, but i'll check up to see if they are backwards compato with PCI, it slips my mind right now..

thanks for all of your lovely opinions!

Nope.

I'm a little concerned with all the newer computers not having very many expansion slots. I guess interfaces and extra DSP are all expected to be firewire in the future. Right now I have 4 pci cards filling all the slots in my old P4 2.66 comp. So no dual core for me. I've been scoping Ebay for people ditching their old 478 boards with 5 pci slots. If I would've gotten a Firewire interface, I wouldn't have so much worry; stupid me. :(

so the UAD-1e isn't any more powerful than the regular UAD1 card?

PCIe is a different interface, supposadly faster( more bandwith)

i heard that the UAD-1e was only a temp thing, and they are going to be releasing some new stuff soon. possibly a UAD-2??

nope, same stuff just different interface to the motherboard.

i might have to get me a UAD-2 then, hopefully they make a firewire rack unit like the Powercore. i'd love to have one of each hehe...

Check the UA board for buzz about a new card. Actually mostly that board is people griping about the existing card . . . but hey, nobody holds a gun to their heads forcing them to use it.

They do have their plugs on sale right now, but they haven't put the cards on sale. I wonder if they will have anything new by NAMM.

Oh, and I have a 5 PCI slot 478, Intel chipset, and you can't have it :p :D
