Wave problem... (With Pictures !)

I've attached a link to a web page that has two wave forms. One from N-track and the other from CoolEdit (demo). As you can tell the images look different. This is a rhythm guitar recorded direct into a tascam 788, dry. Was just wondering what I did wrong. As you can tell from the CE image the wave seems clipped at the bottom. The CE image looks the same in Cubase(demo). The N-track is a licensed copy. Could that be the difference.

looks like you have a DC offset problem in one of the samples. Notice how the waveforms extend much higher above the zero-axis than they do below it?

Wonder why it doesn't show up in the N-Track view???

I downloaded the DCOffset plugin from analogX. I'll see what that does.

You shouldn't need to use plugins to get audio without a dc offset.
 
I don't think its a DC Offset. If it was, the 'center' of the sound wave, around which it ,well, 'circulates' (for lack of a better word) would be elevated from the real zero-center-line visible in the sample window. To me, it looks more like just a graphics problem...?

To me it looks like a graphics problem too. The wave looks like it's had the bottom part "clipped off", without the centering having changed at all.

You know that Cooledit "caches" that display for each waveform, that is, you aren't looking at the real wav data there until you zoom WAY in ?

Find the wav you loaded, look for a file next to it called "*.pk", and delete the .pk file. It's the peak cache. Cooledit will rebuild it next time you open the wav. Is it still the same?

That's what I was thinking when I asked if it sounds as bad as it looks. Looks like a software goof to me.

If it's still acting up, load it into Cooledit 1.2a (your screen looks very much like Cooledit 2.0, which has quite a lot of new bugs as well as features!). If it looks like a CEP2.0 problem, mail support@syntrillium.com and tell 'em about it.

Oh Yea !!!

I think that's about 99.9999% of the problem with this tune. I recorded a telecaster direct via an audiobuddy into a 788. Bad playing + poor recording = shittylookingwaveform.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm gonna' practice retracking until I get it right. Never recorded a guitar direct before. Just trying to get some decent results... Maybe I need one of those POD things.

you'd be suprised...

You'd be suprised how many bands use POD type devices to record nowdays.. or AmpFarm in the TDM environment... sure saves alot of time and miking.... they've come quite a ways with the new modeling technology.. If that's the best waveform your getting off your recordings.. lol.. then yes, get you a POD!!!!! But I'm like the others.. i think that Cool Edit Pro is showing you a false graphic on the waveform..

IMO, a Tele direct in without any compressor or amp (which I assume to be too slow to get all the attack - even a transistor, the speaker should be too slow) has to be recorded VERY quiet (so that it will sound like shit) or will have hard clips (so that it will sound like shit). Whenever I went in directly with single coils, I used a SLIGHT distortion on my ART MP and often a compressor, too. I had very similar problems with a DId electroacoustic and ended up with recording it VERY low, but as it was for the very very background, the low mix level would not disturb - I almost had it at recorded level in the mix...

Just my 2c
