i wanted to start recording my songs on my computer properly and was wondering how much RAM and HDD space ill need. also, how fast will my CPU have to be? i thought about 2.8 or 3.0 GHz
I guess if you want to go all out super computer recording, I was told the G3's (mac) dual processor is the way to go for music. You really don't need much 2.8ghz is probably fine and 512 ddr should get you buy.
It depends on what software you want to use. The g3 with a duel processor is cool, but if you want to run pro tools there is no reason to get the duel processor because pro tools doesn't utilize it. I don't know about nuendo, or cubase or anything, but I know that pro tools doesn't use the duel processor. A mac would be good though.
The market is so replete with powerful processors that virtually anything you buy will be better than what a lot of old professionals are using right now to create really great music. Yes, the bigger the processor, the more you might be able to do.... after lots of work over several years, but by then the hot dog processor you bought today will look pretty anemic.
Instead of dropping loads of cash on the latest and greatest box (and Macs req. loads and loads of cash) I would advise....
Build your PC around a AMD Athlon XP (retail!!) processor.
512MB of RAM
Dual display adapter
Two 19" monitors
Use the rest of the money that you were going to sink into the computer to buy yourself a couple of decent channels (e.g., Toft ATC-2 or FMR RNP/RNC pair), some great mics, a solid converter/effects processor (Kurzweil KSP-8), and a pair of decent monitors.
