Wall of Sound

Ok so when recording a distorted guitar i always seem to get a wall of distorted sound rather than an audible distorted guitar. I have tried turning down the distortion as well as pulling the mics further away from the amp but I still get a wall of distorted sound. Does any one have any tips.

sorry if this isn't descriptive enough i'm not that good at explanations.

The rule for recording distorted guitar is always to turn down the distortion. Make sure you are not clipping while tracking, too, if you have your amp loud.
