what kind of drumset should i buy....strictly for recording cause i have a piece of shit ..that sounds like a piece of shit.... so i need a new one

and i am pissed :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: cause its stoping us from recording our next album


ps. do Pacific drums sound good"?

I played on a £600 one they other day, and it was a dream to play

but it comes down to personal preference and what type of music you play/type of sound you want


and of course, how much you want to spend
 
Yeah dude, everyone is different. Work out how much you want to spend then go into a shop and try everything out. Different head/tuning combinations are also going to change the sound. Even the types of wood the shell is made from. So yeah..... If it were me and I had an unlimited budget I would get me a set of the new Pearl Reference series drums.
 
scour ebay till you can find a 60's-70's era ludwig (small - i think - keystone badge, or a black and olive badge with sharp edges) classic or super classic.

relatively cheap, fantastic sound.

my 22" ludwig classic is one of the best bass drums i've heard.
 
those pacific drums really are a great bargain for the money.

i am partial to ludwig of course, and the post above is correct, you can score a really nice vintage kit for $400-$900 depending on the finish. (Black Diamond Pearl's tend to run cheaper than say a Mod Orange) I prefer the BDP's.

Just be careful on the bearing edges, you may need to get them recut if the drums have been improperly stored or abused over the years. (any local timber shop should be able to recut them at a 45 degree angle for you)

If the bearing edges are wacky, your drums won't ring properly and make recording a nightmare.

You can even score a really nice classic from the 90's for the same price range, everyone is so bent on DW/Pork Pie etc. so they are going WAY cheaper than they should be. Those are 9 ply maple just like all the "trendy" brands are, and can also sound a million times better, especially the kick.

this is a real nice kit, if they are infact 6-ply shells, it's actually a "super classic" kit which are quite collectible. (or at least they will be 10-15 years from now) however, this kit is quite overpriced for ebay, no matter how nice of condition it's in. i would expect to pay more like $800 for a used kit like this. keep your eye out for these if they get relisted. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38097&item=7302703545&rd=1
 
Have you tried just putting new heads on your other kit?

I had a set of Groove Percussions* for a while. I had the wraps ripped off along with the tags. It had an ugly color, now it is just wood. I put some Remo Pinstripes on it and had them tuned up nicely.. people would come up to me after I played and ask me about my drumset. They were amazed when I told them what it was.

*That's a $300 set.. with all hardware and cymbals!

I know that the paragraph above is worded pretty poorly. I'm passing out. I think I'll go to bed now.
 
i dont know if any of you have heard of CB drums....but if anyone ever asks about them say..."NO DO NOT BUY THEM" i am looking for the hendrix(Mitch Mitchell)/stevie ray vaughan (Chris Layton) sound ..i know there completely different sounds ..so i am leaning towards the Chris Layton sound i like it more than then mitch mitchell sound
