those pacific drums really are a great bargain for the money.
i am partial to ludwig of course, and the post above is correct, you can score a really nice vintage kit for $400-$900 depending on the finish. (Black Diamond Pearl's tend to run cheaper than say a Mod Orange) I prefer the BDP's.
Just be careful on the bearing edges, you may need to get them recut if the drums have been improperly stored or abused over the years. (any local timber shop should be able to recut them at a 45 degree angle for you)
If the bearing edges are wacky, your drums won't ring properly and make recording a nightmare.
You can even score a really nice classic from the 90's for the same price range, everyone is so bent on DW/Pork Pie etc. so they are going WAY cheaper than they should be. Those are 9 ply maple just like all the "trendy" brands are, and can also sound a million times better, especially the kick.
