Let's talk wah wah pedals....

I use a standard cry baby. Am I missing something by not getting one of the variable Q models?

What is your favorite wah wah and why?

Well, actually I did and it occured to me that I don't want to be messing with a lot of knobs at floor level. Just wondered about others experiences.

I use a 535Q, but only because of the true bypass. Wah suck your tone in bypass mode big time. I am really considering a BudWah. It's basically a crybaby with true bypass.

I like my effects to sound really, really nice with minimal knobs and doo-dads. I don't want to spend hours tweaking. I want to step on it and have it sound good, and have it sonically disappear when off.

Found this data at a site mentioned in an old thread here. It's a way to modify a standard cry baby so it has bypass.

True Bypass Conversion for '60's-'80's standard Vox and Dunlop wah
includes american and Italian-made Crybaby, Jen, Dallas-Arbiter, and more.

1) Unsolder wires to SPDT (stock switch), remove it, and Install new DPDT.
2) Find Input Jack Terminal "Tip"....unsolder and disconnect only the short wire, follow that wire to the circuit
"Input" (Marked #1 on PCB Diagram), unsolder and remove it here as well. Leave in the long wire on Input Jack
"Tip" terminal and resolder it to make sure there's a good connection.
3) Run this wire from Input Jack "Tip" to DPDT terminal #4 and do not solder.
4) Attach the wire from DPDT terminal #4 and jumper it to #3 solder both
5) Attach a wire from Output Jack "Tip" to DPDT Terminal #5 and solder.
6) Run a wire from PCB terminal #1 up to DPDT Terminal #2 and solder.
7) Attach short wire from Wah Pot terminal #3 to DPDT terminal #6 and solder.
8) attach a short (ground) wire from Wah Pot Teminal#1 to DPDT Terminal #1 and solder

You can rest assured that I will never make the mistake again -

I bought a standard Morley.

I love the housing and the fact the On/Off is not under the pedal.

If I can, I will transplant the guts of a Crybaby into it. The sound though has one spot of instant transition. That's it. I was quite disappointed.

At the time I was in need of a wah and found this one for $25 at an estate sale. Glad I didn't pay full for it

I've used to own the variable Q model Crybaby, it was OK. I also used to own one of the first optical Morley wahs (not the Bad Horsie) and it was awful. I've also used several other wahs like an old Ibanez wah, and a vintage Morley (that was pretty cool). It wasn't until I got the Budda wah that I realized how bad the Crybabies sucked your tone. Dunlop should be sued for stealing people's tone.

A friend of mine has a Vox wah that is awesome also. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison between the Vox and the Budda, but I would say both are by far the best wahs I've ever used.

I had and sold my cry baby with volume pedal. I still own a Budda wah and a Teese RMC. The Budda is up for sale. The Teese, no way. Love the tone.

the VOX wah is the only wah i've ever needed.

YMMV

I was recently forced to sell my Vox v846 on ebay. it was such a sad day... :( and i only got $100 for the damn thing, too!

Living in my own world.

I used a crybaby in the chain for a long long time bar none. So I didn't notice how it changed the sound. I just tweaked to what I wanted with it in there and was happy. Didn't matter that I didn't like the sound without it, cuz I didn't go without it.

I've been twiddlin' with my new effects box for so long, I forget what sounds good anymore. I have to record, take a break, record, break, just to find the sounds I like anymore. Too many choices.

I listen to the last say.. 5 songs that I've recorded, and I'd have to say... I don't even HAVE a sound. They are all so different, it's like 5 different bands.

Not sure if all that means anything.. but its my thought.

VSpaceBoy, I know exactly what you mean.

As a songwriter you are torn between staying in a vein or following where the song takes you.

I just go with the flow and see where it takes me.
