Hello,
Just got my vs 880 ex yesterday. I am looking for a cd burner to mixdown to. I have read about the plextor cd burner which I'm probably going to get. My question is can I burn cds with it using 2.0 version? That is what I have right now. I've been hearing about updates for it but how do I get them? Also if anyone else has any tips for cd burners besides the over priced roland one? Thanks,
Graham

Hey, man...

I think the Plextor is the best, if not the only choice. They make the rather pricey Roland CDR ll. The OS can't tell the difference...
You can get OS system upgrades at:

www.rolandus.com
___________
wawazzat?
What was that?

I have also heard out here that you can use your SPDIF digital outs to your sound card and use a PC burner..if you have this type of setup.

Also, I have been successful at going out through the headphone jack to my PC soundcard and recording realtime to my PC. From ther i just save it via my standard recording software and burn it to my Sony internal burner. It's not what you could call professional, but the sounds on my demo say otherwise.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck!

I bought the Roland CD burner a couple of months ago and needed to upgrade the OS to 2.05 which I believe Roland said was the minimum operating system compatible with a burner. The dealer I purchased both the 880 abd the burner at did the upgrade for free - if you call the total price of the two units free - ha!

I believe you need to use a Plextor or Roland burner only with the 880 as there is some proprietary software issues involved - however you can use either of those burners with others manufacturers components so I have been told.

Using the Roland 880 manual to burn my first CD for archiving data was a little confusing (gee there's a revelation). I found out you can only archive 1 or all of the songs you have on a drive to a CD - you cannot save 2 or 3 or whatever out of however many you have on that drive as it "finalises" after you do the burn.

Good luck - not sure about burning from the digitals to another burner....

If you want to burn an audio CD,you can hook up any CD recorder on the market to the S/PDIF outputs of the VS and it will work tits up.For backup of data,I hate to admit that I paid $500 for one but the Roland works great and CDRW's are a hell of a lot cheaper than Zip discs per Meg. BUT,there's a new kid on the block, the Castlewwod ORB; $179 at Fry's with 1 free 2.2 gig.cartridge with additional cartridges @ $24-28 ea.
