Anyone used the mic sims in the VS840? All I have is a AKG cheap-o mike....any advice? I will buy a good mike, but I wanna get going NOW! Any suggestions? I also borrowed a Digitech Vocalist (interesting!) ...

By all means, get going. The mic sims are, by roland's admission, just tweaked EQ's basically. They are good as an effect, (I liked the dynamic>U87 sim when I was using them), and if all you have is a dynamic mic, they can help a lot in getting closer to what you're looking for. I started off with an 840ex and an SM57, in the same boat. If you're going to get another mic, a condensor is a good bet, better for acoustic guitar, cymbals, vocals etc, but you will also need a preamp to provide phantom power (and the preamps in the 840 pretty much suck anyway). I use the pres in a mackie mixer, and get the added benefits of routing flexibility and being able to compare my mixes to CD's among other things.

I'd also recommend visiting www.vsplanet.com if you haven't - there's an 840 forum there.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks...

Thanks a lot for the tips....they are great!

Do it, use it; don't wait for better stuff or better times. Time is the one thing we can't create - don't waste it. Instead, use what you have, and when you get better gear, then use that. Just don't wait.

Treeline is right!

Don't put off recording waiting for that new piece of gear. You can always redo it when you get it down the road. Capture the ideas or full songs when they come!

If your like me I waited on a new mic and by that time the ideas were gone. Ofcourse my short term memory is getting worse. LOL!
