My Zip Drive in the vs-840 just suffered from the "Click of Death" three days ago. I was told that a replacement drive could only be offered from Roland because of a proprietary connection. I think this may be missinformation from a greedy repair tech.

Question:

Is it possible to substitute a 250mb zip without any sort of software upgrade?

you can use a standard internal ide zip drive butt.........It has to be a 100MB unless you have an EX/GX I think that you can get a software upgrade to make it all work together.

Right~o

You're correct otter, you scurvy dog you....;)

If your drive bit the big one, then now's the time to go Zip 250.

I would if it were mine. You can order the EX or GX upgrade from Roland on a Zip disk, or download it from the www.rolandus.com website.

It's true that any IDE drive will work.
I pretty sure there's no proprietary connector.

But I'm not pretty

Thanks for the info.

I opened up my machine (well past its warranty) and it is a standard IDE connection. So I ordered a 100mb drive. I did not know that Roland offered just the upgade on a disk for $40. Do you know if you need a 100mb drive to load the upgrade software?

Thanks

I bought a 100 mb zip from best buy and swapped it with the dead drive in my vs 840, and it wont recognize the drive. Ive been playing with jumper settings, no luck yet. Maybe that "greedy repair tech" was just trying to save u a headache.

My drive was in the "master setting" if you haven't tried that yet.

And then on to my problem:

I got a new zip drive and installed it. Then when it starts playing, it goes fine for about fifteen seconds and then the tracks start to get all jumbled and I get an error message and it stops. It looks like my original drive was an Iomega and the new drive is from NEC. I am wondering if that may be a problem. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

P.S. That greedy repair tech was going to upgrade my machine for $275 plus labor. So far I am still way lower than that in what I have spent.

Say...

Did you guys replace them with a Zip 250 drive?

If you did, you'll have to have the upgrade as well.

Maybe that's the problem.
