To Subtractor:

If you come across this, I am truly curious about your statement that hardware sampers sound better, still, than software samplers. I have an EMU6400 with upgraded RAM, and an internal hard drive. It sounds great, I must admit and I have many sample libraries that sound great.

Of course, there are new libraries out there that work mainly on the Gigasampler and Gigastudio. There are other libraries for other programs too. Because I run my studio on a Mac, I opted for the Kontakt program. I just got it this weekend and frankly, despite the claims of ease of use, I have not found it to be so remarkably easy or intuitive. Quite the contrary.

All this means that I cannot yet tell you by comparison whether or not the software sampler compares favorably to the hardware sampler of if it is better or worse for that matter.

Therefore, I am curious to know what empirical data you used, if any, to reach your conclusion. In other words, can you back up the statement that software samplers do not, in general, sound as good as hardware samplers with anything excpet your subjective opinion.

This, I know, is not only a tall order but the essence of most of the banter on this and many similar sites. But, anyway, give the answer a try if you will.

That was a very well written post Phil. Unfortunately you misunderstood me. I was speaking of soft synths. I'm really not sure about soft samplers. I would think that the quality of samples lie in the samples themselves rather than the hardware that plays them. If you think about it, they're all hardware samplers. It's just your computer that is the hardware in that case. Although I'm sure results would vary ever so slightly depending on your soundcard and such...:)
