Volume levels vs. compressor

Not that I know what the hell I'm talking about either, but I usually find that the best results come from a combination of volume automation and compression. Using volume automation curves to level out the big swings lets you use relatively subtle compression to get the track to sit properly without the artifacts of radical compression.

Sweetnubs is like a couple of other members on this site. They are knowledgable (or at least they seem that way) but have horrible (online) personalities.
