In most mixing software, you should be able to select something like "show volume envelope" on your vocal track. A line will appear over your track, representing the current volume. you can create "nodes"-kind of like pivot points along the line. the line goes up, the volume goes up. the line goes down-well, you get the idea. It's basically a way to automate volume changes. Hope that helps.

You beat me to it, Bulls Hit. I used the volume envelope on the main vocals a lot on the CD I recently finished. I try to avoid using compression unless it's absolutely necessary.
