What exactly is a volume envelope? When would it be appropriate to apply them to vocals tracks?

vol envelope

In most mixing software, you should be able to select something like "show volume envelope" on your vocal track. A line will appear over your track, representing the current volume. you can create "nodes"-kind of like pivot points along the line. the line goes up, the volume goes up. the line goes down-well, you get the idea. It's basically a way to automate volume changes. Hope that helps. :)

Sometimes you might want to use a volume envelope on a vocal instaed of compression. If there's only a couple of spots that need smoothing, sometimes the envelope can be a better choice

They're also wonderful for when you want to send some volume to a loved one far away. The postage will kill ya', though... :D

Okay, okay, I know... It wasn't that funny. :(

I see, a new way to slow down the speed of sound, send it through the mail :D

You beat me to it, Bulls Hit. I used the volume envelope on the main vocals a lot on the CD I recently finished. I try to avoid using compression unless it's absolutely necessary.

Yea but when the envelope is opened, it just all pops out all at once...sounds like crap.
