Voltage regulator?

On one of the delay units in a modular rackmount unit I recently purchased used never powered up. I finally found my tiny screwdriver and opened the unit up and there was a part that was literally broken in half. It was in the circuit directly after the power plug and on/off switch and has a number "AN7809" printed on it and searching for this showed me that it was a voltage regulator. A little more searching and I learned that is also an obsolete part. So my question is what is a replacement part for this? From what I read I believe it is a +9 volt output (78 indicating positive voltage and 09 indicating 9 volts). Would any +9 regulator work? Also, where can I find one of these without having to order some bulk quantity, and is switching it as simple as disconnecting the wiring harness from the old part and connecting it to the new?

If any of you electrically inclined folk could help me out I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks in advance. If you need any pictures let me know.

Most probably any 7809 regulator such as TL7809 or MC7809 would work. Any decent electronics store should stock those. Just make sure you get the same size/format/max. current rating. Also check if any other parts are broken. Usually there's a reason a regulator quits.
