Voice over VHS

I've tried recording a voice over a VHS tape with no success. How do I record a video signal and a mic signal at the same time? I get the video OK but no sound.

You can't record an audio signal AFTER the video's already recorded on a run-of-the-mill vcr. You can record both at the same time though - your video signal is input at the video IN connection, and your audio signal is input at the audio IN (L/R, if stereo).

You will need two VCRs and a mixer to do this trick so it is possible.

Yes - that will work, but you will lose a significant level of video quality in the dubbing process.

Some video cameras and a few VCRs have a feature called "audio dub." This allows you to cue a tape up to a certain spot and re-record audio on the audio track of the tape without affecting the video track. The VCRs with this feature are usually high dollar jobs. But I used to have a video camera that had this feature. It was just a common, regular priced video camera from about ten years ago. If you have a camera, check it out, or check to see if anyone else has a camera with this feature.

The best approach from an audio standpoint is still the 2 VCRs.
