Im gonna try and get a very rough mix up later today... I will post here when It's up....:)

I once found the patience and did a vocal-part 3 times... I mean I doubled it twice (I did a lot more than 3 takes).
I really didn't like the effect. It wasn't any better than a chorus-effect.
What did I do wrong?

by the way: def leppard was mentioned. I know their records are 'heavily' produced (not to say overproduced)... just 'mutt lange-y' ;) . it's quite normal to double the backing vocals a few times and add a heavy chorus to make them sound slick. but the lead vocals? Is Joe Elliot doubled that many times? I really think his high register still sucks anyway... (everytime I'm frustrated about my vocals I go and listen to def leppard... love bites or something like that).

someone in here once said that dexter holland (offspring) has such a weak voice that they have to blend about 6 tracks of his vocals... if I did that it would end in a damn muddy sound.

where is it gonna end when we double everything. I mean - yes, 4 guitars sound better than 2... but somewhere you have to draw the line... and believe me, I never double any solo-guitars, so why should I do it with the lead-vocals?

Probably more common...

...than you may think...

There are probably only a few truely marquee singers out there that have both the ooomph and consistency to hit it nuts on in one track.

Yes, most Def Lappard Backing Vocals are 130 Tracks.... And I agree.. as much of a fan I am of DL, Im not really into Joe's Voice...

The Lead vocal is just one layer... Joe all by himself...

The Backing vocals are mostly Mutt Lange (Little known, true fact)

You may have noticed that, Shania and alot of Bryan Adams, and even one Brittany Spears song has that Def Leppard Backing vocal sound... Well thats all Mutt..

Good point>>:DA bad voice is a bad voice, all the doubling in the world won't help....

Ozzie is almost always doubled..

Cheers
Joe

Oh Shit, I almost forgot....

My example of the layering is up...

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/rockpop/voxvendor/singles

Click on "Vocal layering example"

Rough 5 minute mix just for this example.. rough guide lead vocal still....

Song is very unfinished still..

The example is in the chorus....
This is 75 layers... I wanted to put up the example quick while this thread is "hot"... I still have to mix and buss the final 75 vocals to go on top of these...

ahhh

I record a lot of local bands....and almost all the time do 2-4 tracks of vocals....depending on what it is......
also though, a lot of the time (mostly for punk recordins..etc.) I put the band in my "vocal booth" (bathroom w/ carpet..lol), and have them just stand around the mic for some gang vocals. I'd say that it sounds really good too.

If you wanna hear a song w/ some gang vocals....go to http://www.angelfire.com/emo/shackrockinc/links.html and click the only link available there...lol - then, unless you wanna hear the whole song, the gang vocal part starts at about 1:09.

voxvendor: now THAT's what I wanted to know... of course I presumed that only a few singer do their vocals in one TAKE (and then it's probably luck), and yes, maybe the first part of a verse is from take number 24 and the second part is out of take number 103, but you won't hear take 24 and 103 at the same time. so no DOUBLING there.

Yup... Exactly....... With Layers like this, as demonstrated in my above example.... The thing that really makes the difference and is actually more important that pitch is that every vocal layer be phrased exactly the same and starting and ending exactly the same spot...

Pitch is important... but with hundreds of layers it will sort of correct itself (within reason of course)

If I pulled out 2 seperate layers from my above example.. you would hear a bit of wavering... (very slight)... The pitch wasn't perfect... But in the end they all seem to counter correct each other

If you don't have the layers all starting and ending at the same time, your screwed....
