Other than a compressor and/or a limiter what can be a nice addition to a signal chain when it comes to recording nice vocals?

Other than a voice, a mic, a cable, and a recording device? Nothing.

Yep, the idea is to have as little in between as possible. You can always add effects and whatever else later. If you have a really dynamic singer, you may want a compressor in there too, but I usually don't.

Mic --> Preamp --> Recorder

I usually track with light outboard compression as an insert off my preamp, just to tame any wild peaks. Everything else (additional compression, de-essing, reverb/delay, etc. -- depending on the needs of the song) gets added later. Don't track with an effect unless you are certain you want it (with those exact settings), as you'll be unable to remove/change it later if it doesn't work in your mix.

A nice voice helps, if you can find one.

LoL @ all these people.

You don't necessarily have to get these brands, but here's my vocal path.

Neumann U87
Avalon 737 (compressor/eq)
Apogee Ensemble (firewire interface)
MacPro 8-core (computer)

basically - Voice>Mic>Preamp>Interface>Computer

Hit me up for questions.

Yeah...but what's different about your answer...?
He said "other than a compressor"...so minus the Avalon...your vocal chain is just mic & pre...
...same thing everyone else is telling him :)

Yeah...a 5 year resuscitation! :D

I'm kinda' chuckling at Kollision's "hit me up for questions" comment.
Do you think the OP follow-up with any? ;)

Considering countrylac has not even had any activity on this board since 12/30/2009, I think the chances of him "hitting him up" are unlikely .

Five years ago I would've said "George Martin at gunpoint" :eek:but technology's moved on since then !
