Vocal Preamp Applications

I Went To The Music Store And Said I'm Trying To Build A Pa System
With A More Professional Sound.i Suggested I Would Like To Have
A Better Vocal Sound. Also I Would Like To Have Abetter Overall
Sound,that I Would Be Micing All Insterments.
Well Anyway They Sold Me A Vocal Preamp--with A Compressor/gate
Built Into Unit.
Since I Am New To The Mixing World,i Have No Idea How I Should Hook This Unit Up.
Should I Hook It Between Main Out And Crossover Like A Compressor?

Or Should I Use It On Vocals Only? If So How Do I Hook It Up?
Can Someone Please Help Me?
 
are you serious, people actually go to the store and buy something they have no clue how to use or what it does?

Well it's hard to give someone advice if we don't know what equipment you're hooking up. Maybe just plug the mic into the unit, and then the line out from that into your mixer or whatever you're using
 
as a side chain, then it could be applied to more than one channel, or mic to compressor out to channel

I dont understand how these two statements can be in the same question....? Trying to build a PA system with a "more professional sound"...? More professional than what?

How did they convince you that a preamp with a built in compressor would make the PA sound more professional???

Are you trying to start a sound reinforcement system from scratch? And make it sound better than the other sound systems you are used to hearing?? What will you be using this PA for?
 
Take it back and don't buy anything from these fools again.

Mic preamps, like the one you described, are for recording. You could use them for your PA, but you would still need a mixing board. Your sound will only be as good as the crappiest sounding component. If you plug a nice preamp into a bad board, it will still sound bad.

If you are recording, that's a different story.
