Hi,

I'd like to buy a good (but not $$$$$) microphone for live vocal performance.
If it helps, is a female singer.

I heard AKG D880 and AUDIX OM5 (OM series) are not expensive and many times get better reviews than the Sures (specially the Audix).

But how would these two models performance be compared when used in a live female vocal performance? I know the D880 is cheaper, so "how better" (and why) is the AUDIX when compared to it, given the use I will put into it.

Thanks

They are actually quite similar. The OM5 is a "tight" hyper cardioid where as the D880 is a super cardioid... so their patterns are similar. The OM5 is just slighty brighter with a bit more lowend roll off to reduce boom and mud. I own an OM5 an love it on vocals of any kind as a work horse mic. You have no clue the difference of an OM5 to say a 58 on stage. I have run FOH with both in the mix and there is no comparison. I have used the D880 only a very few times, but what I remember, it was quite similar to the OM5. There is a $10 difference between the two. My recommendation... find a place where you can try both out or find a mail order place that is hip to you returning one of them after trying them both for a week.
