I record vocals with a audio technica condensor and I use the low cut switch, but I have a roll off/cut option on my Pre, and was wondering how High is too high to start cutting the low end off of vocals.

Im not talking EQing, just frequencies that are normally cut out/ rolled off of vocals.

Im just looking for a cleaner, less ambient sound. (not that its bad now...)

Depends what kind of vocals your singing and what type of voice you have...typical pop vocals Id say your ok rolling off below 100...maybe alittle high not much 150 max......might want to drop that lower to like 60-80 if your a depper singer....thats what ive been told before.

I wouldn't use both, if that's what you are asking. Try it one way and then the other to see which you like better

Is the Roll-off on the pre adjustable or fixed. If it's fixed check the documentation for both to see what frequency they are set at. As far as which you should use, like farview said, try them both. Chances are they will affect the final output and quite different ways (i.e. Roll-off Slope, Frequeny Cutoff Point, etc).

Its a variable cut off, from 20db - 2.00k db.

Thats why I was asking, I wanted to experiment with it some, but wanted some type of starting point or window to stay in...

I think you mean Hz not Db. I generally stay within the 60hz-80hz range. (Sometimes a bit higher if I have a really busy low-end in the mix).

The manual actually says Decibles, but I think it may have been a misprint, because I cant find what the roll off would be if it was fixed and that was to control the slope...

So Im assuming it was Hz, as well...

What do you think?

I use a Roland MMP-2...
