I posted this in the rack, but maybe it belongs in here a lil more.

I'm in the market for some good sounding effects, since i'm not really happy with the ones in my VS1880. I'm looking for something that hits guitars and vocals mostly. Any suggestions? Oh, budget....hmmm....I'm gonna go cheap and try to keep it under $500. What am I leaving out?

I'm looking at TC Electronic G Major a little. Any other suggestions? I know it's a "guitar" processor, but are there any decent ones that can handle both voice and guitar that I can slap in this rack of mine?

How do you want to use the effects unit?

Guitars can use a wide range of effects. However vocals are usually somewhat different, with common emphesis towards reverb and delay.

Mostly for guitar, but if something has nice vocal patches on it, it's a big plus. The effects on the Roland are just kind of stale to me.

I don't really know jackshit about guitar processors, except that I think that most of them probably sound like dookie. Well, I just want one to throw some different textures on recordings, mainly like vibratos, chorus, delays, etc. I've actually kind of narrowed it down between Digitech GNX stuff and a TC Electronic G MAJOR....also have had Kurzweil Mangler ideas.

I have heard good and bad stuff about them all (noisy, bad gates, horrible distortions). I'm not really looking for a great distortion, just good vibratos, delays, etc.

and I want to make whale sounds.......did I mention that?

check out some of Line 6's stuff... it's amazing if you're on a budget. they have the Toneport UX1 and UX2 if you're looking more along the lines of just recording, and it has guitar, bass, and mic inputs and there are many effect presets for each (which you can completely customize to your taste). i got the UX2, and it I love it!. Then there's the POD XT Live for guitar and bass only, no vocals, but that is more for a Live application... playing live that is. I dunno there's too much to say and I need to go to bed. so just check out www.line6.com

listened to the Pod Pro sound list on the website....man they sucked.

well, the distotions suck.

See if you can score an old Yamaha FX500 on eBay it has great efects for vocal & guitar (as well as bass & others) that are very tweakable. It'll be cheap & playful. The distortion presets are absolute pooh - but that's the same with most presets.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the sounds I've been getting from some older Digitech stuff. I have an Rp-3 and and Rp-6. Floor boxes, but could be used for recording on the cheap. Mono in stereo out, a nice array of effects, easy editing, and surprisingly good sound for their age. And cheap on Ebay. :D

Lots of the reviews criticise the distortion on those 2 units. The key is that you *have* to work with the EQ a bit and tweak the distortion levels- it dramatically changes the sound.

I'm sure you can do better with a $500 budget, though. Where you will run into trouble is looking for harmonizing effects for vocals. If you don't need that then pretty much any *decent* guitar processor will have at least something that you can throw on a vocal.

Also consider something like an Ensoniq DP4. 4 mono processors that can be linked in pretty much any combination. 4 individuals, 2 stereo, 4 in series, etc. Old enough that it has sweet blessed knobs to tweak the values in the menu. ;) 16 bit, but I think it sounds good. I haven't played with the distortion on it much, but it does have it. I think I shall...

Take care,
Chris

Knobs!! Tweak! This unit looks like it might sound good. I'm reading some reviews on harmony-central now. Can you tell me a little bit more about it, like what effects does it have? Does it have tremelo/vibrato? Can I indeed make whale sounds on it? I think that's a string swell patch with pitch shifting...haha....

thanks for the info guys n gals

I have an old Boss Pro SE50 that I have been happy with except of course the distortion, I have never seen (heard) a distortion on a DSP that I have been happy with, instead I use stomp boxes from Digitech and Behringer and Yamaha and Korg, you get the idea. Bottom line, turn up my Princeton to 8 and I am happy. :)

For just a straight up effects processor without any amp modeling features or distortion, I prefer the G-Major (As do about 10 of my other guitar player buddies in this area)

Nice and clean Non-coloring effects that are fully programable.

I would imagine that this would work very well for vocals also --- I used to run a bunch of Alesis Quadraverbs for my effects processors......I have one in my rackmount guitar rig, and one in my rackmount PA rig as well.........still use them actually :)

I've just heard the G Major is a little noisy? Is this true?

does anyone know id there's a site with samples from the Ensoniq?
