I use a ART Mic-Pre with a NT1 microphone going into my Akai DPS16. My problem is that Im getting terrible "s" sounds out of my vocals. Ive tried using some eq to help but when I take the highs out, then the vocals become muddy.

I know there are Dessing Processors out there, is that my only solution? If so whats a good one?

yes there are De Essing processors out there but:
-they cost a considerable amount of money, and
-they are a one purpose unit (they are only used on vocals)

if you have money to spend on a one purpose processor go for it, but the money can be better spent other places. try different mic placements with the singer, like having the mic positioned above the singer, so they sing past the mic, instead of right into it. try a foam wind screen (the kind that goes over the mic). these things always seem to help alot for me

this is just my 2cents

You can 'make' a deesser with a compressor and an eq, run the vocal track through the compressor as usual, set the settings to 'limit', maximum ratio, hard knee, fast attack and release.
Attatch an eq to the side chain of the compressor and boost the 'ess' frequencies on the equalizer ( usually between 6 khz and 10 khz) as much as the eq can, roll off everything below 1khz too, to stop low frequencies from triggering the comp. Slowly decrease the threshold until the right amount of 'ess' gets limited. You will need to listen to the vocal and mess around with a parametric eq first to identify the right frequency.
