compressed vocals sound nice in a recording. How legitimate would live compression be at a regular show?

would it produce the same effect as when recorded? is live vocal compression a common thing? (it sounds like the strokes compress the hell out of their vocals, the eels too. maybe not, i don't know).

also, if this IS a good idea, can some one kindly suggest a suitable compressor for this purpose?

thanks.

maybe as a limiter?

I don't really know about using compression in a live set up but using the compressor as a limiter could be helpful. You wouldn't have to worry about the vocal mic clipping and sending annoying pops through your mains at a kajillion decibles.

Compression is used live by most people doing it professionally. The Behringer Autocom is just fine for live use, I have 8 of them in a rack right now. Any other decent compressor would do the job also.

Compression:YES - Limiter:SURE !

You MAY use a Compressor to allow higher average level to your live vocals. But be cautious about setting too low the compressor threshold and too high the compression ratio. It could kill the nuances and the human feeling of your lead singer !

You MUST use a compressor/limiter to avoid distorsion/clipping.

............and also as a de-esser for siblance control!!
