How does it affect the music, and why? Examples please :)

The best online reference for explaining compression is on the Rane Notes site HERE.

One point...if you apply the compression to a vocal track, it shouldn't affect the music at all!

To try and put it all in one sentence, compression is a technique to reduce the dynamic range of a recording, allowing the compressed material to stand out better from other tracks. For more, check out the Rane Notes.

Basically just came to say what this gentleman said.

It sounds to me like you don't fully understand what compression is, nor how it'd used. Do a bit of reading up on what compression is and what all the knobs are doing, and I think you'll find your answer. =]

After you read that the #1 thing about compression BEFORE you grab a compressor is, What do you want your audio to do or what do you want it to sound like? Dont just grab a compressor cause you think it belongs in the chain use one cause you NEED one. You will find more often that you will proly use compressors less.
