hello again:

in my never ending to quest to design a Studioware panel for the Vm-200 for use in SONAR 2.0, I think I have begun to master the basic functions.

What I need now is a good picture for the design of the panel. I'm realy looking for a screen capture. I have taken digital photos of mine, but they never really come out well. Can anyone send me a good photo, or point me to one?

Thanks,

Tony

Try this:

How does the VM200 work as a controller? I'm thinking of getting the VM200, but the main thing I want it for is to control other devices and my DAW via MMC. I don't why they discontinued the thing... they could have upgraded the converters to 24/96 and changed the processor to keep up. anywhoo....

Thanks for the link. The VM-200 works pretty well as a controller. Another poster to this site showed me how to control the faders in SONAR (or cakewalk PA9) by assigning values from each fader on the VM.
i can also control the transport and record/arm tracks on my Vf16 via MMC, as well as the transport in SONAR.
I don't know about controlling other devices, but i know it sends CC messages. I have MidiOx, but I really haven't figured out how to use it!

While those pictures are good, I think I can possibly design a better one in Adobe illustrator or photoshop. I don't know if you've seen the Line 6 POD and Bass POD Studioware panels in Cakewalk, but they look terrific. that's the effect I'm trying to achieve.
Thanks for your help. i'll keep you posted.

VM200 Studioware + Social Call

Alright, Tonester! Keep working on that thing 'til you get it right...and I sit silently on the sidelines and await the final results! Heck, if it works, I'll be more than willing to give you a few bucks for your time! The more automation, the better. I'm still working off of my manually mapped controls.

I did immediately upgrade to Sonar v2. I love it...works great with my Dakota. I still can't seem to get the option to go down below 11.6ms buffers with the version 8 drivers, but I usually keep it around 24ms anyway. During regular band practices, I'm bringing in between 14 and 16 inputs live, which is stressing my poor PIII-700, especially on playback....especially as I get above 18 tracks....or add software pluggins.

I don't think I ever told you, but I also added a VC8 to my setup a couple of months ago. With the VM200 + VC8 + Roland VS840(8 analog+8 analog+2 S/PDIF), I can pump in 18 channels live now!

Also, we got our old drummer back...the guy that we recorded with on our CD at http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/154/hung_jury_of_virginia.html. Three days ago I uploaded a new song from a few months ago with our last drummer, but I'm still waiting for it to show up. It's a bit different than the past music. It shows the style of our newest Guitarist, but is also very much Bass-driven. I've also done some remixing on 3 of the songs that were already there. Having too much fun with all of these toys!

Anyway, back to work! C'ya!

VF-16 Studioware panel

Tonester, do you have a complete Studioware panel for the VF-16? If so, do you have a link? Thanks for your time or information.

Regards,
Daniel

VF16 studioware, and Hi Tom!

I'm not sure about a VF16 studioware panel. i just picked one up myself. Since they have no motorized faders, I'm not sure how you would apply a panel, but maybe you could give me some possible apps. Check out www.vf16.com, if you haven't already!

Tom:
I still get 5.8 latency in XL 2, with 2 buffers, no dropouts, except upon listening to "screamin chicken", which is a demo on the XL 2.0 cd. I think that is more a function of my PIII 450. still haven't upgraded that yet, so I'm kind of limited on the # of audio tracks I can process. I am however able to dump 8 tracks of my band from my VF16 to the dakota, sync'd to SONAR,so it's pretty cool.

My band recently got signed to a 3 album deal with Frontiers/Now&Then records based in Italy and the UK. Recording starts in July.

Our official website is up. Older pic of my home studio is there. www.livesayrox.com. We may be playing Thunderdome in Baltimore soon. Very outside chance, but who knows?

Glad to hear about your drummer, and keep Rockin"!

Great deal for you guys! I'll check out the site. I uploaded a song in progress a couple of weeks ago. We were working on it with the last drummer, and will probably re-record it from scratch, as new ideas have come up since then. The song is called 'No One Else' and can be found on our MP3.com site. I don't have the link handy...just search for Hung Jury Of Virginia. It's the last song on the page.

Talk to you later,

Have you finished it yet? Send me what you have! I finally picked up a VM200 and it kicks ass! I've set it up to control the faders, pans, and mutes in Nuendo, SAWStudio demo, and I'm about to tackle to Sonar. What does a panel do anyway?

With the panel, I can control the fader movements, panning, FX sends, stereo faders channel on/off on the VM-200 from within SONAR. I say SONAR, because they have a feature called "StudioWare", which are panels designed by the folks at Cakewalk, and by users. For instance, they have a Line 6 POD Studioware, a Yamaha 01V, and many others. They are actaullay pretty impressive looking. The designers take bitmap images of the various hardware devices and make the software so that when you click on a fader, it moves. I can control my POD without having to touch it, and it can be in another part of the room. same with the VM-200. i've got the controls on my panel to work, but I don't have the "skin" to make it look good. i'm working on it, though, really!
As far as Nuendo goes, i have no idea if they ahve this feature, so I doubt my panel would work for you.
i do know, however, that some people have gotten Peavey's StudioMix hardware controller, to work in programs other than Cakewalk. StudioMix is like a Houston, or an EZBus

Good luck

I'm sorry, I didn't fully read your post. I only saw the Nuendo, so I assumed (incorrectly) that you weren't familiar with StudioWare.

you can also control the faders in SONAR from the VM-200. Just open the console view, and right-click on any fader, and choose remote control, then set it to the value from page 212 of the VM-200 manual. I learned that trick from my "e" buddy Tom Kemp, who is a frequent poster to this forum (Happy 4th, Tom)

The only thing with my panel is that you have to set it up for the midi device you are using. Mine is a Midisprot 2X2, so all controls reflect it. You'll have to go into design mode and tweak it a bit.

if you'd like me to send you my bare bones panel, let me know, and I'll fiddle with it a bit more, and make sure it's 100% functional.

Thanks tonester. I made my own panel just using the "stock" controls in Sonar. I was hoping you had a graphically accurate one put together.

Hey, Tonester....
Yeah, I'm still around. I poke my head in here now and then, just to see if anything exciting is going on. The 4th was a good one. We hadn't gone out for fireworks in a few years, so we did this year. It was a good show...and good food too!

I hate to say, I haven't been using the studioware panels. I've been actually spending what little time I have available for recording doing just that...scratching down some ideas. I went on vacation for 2 weeks in June, and took a guitar, a bass, my VS840 and the necessary cables. Did some recording there, as it was raining most of our stay in Florida. I'd love to do that again, though!

How was your 4th? You can email me the answer if you wish...since this is a VM200 forum....

cool..

do you have SONAR2 yet? I was wondering if you know anything about the control surface feature. apparently you can teach SONAR to "learn" control movements. haven't checked it out yet......

I haven't tried the learn function yet. I used the learn function in Nuendo and Samplitude to make the maps. Worked like charm. For example, you can do one fader and then just manually edit the parameters for the other faders. Then "learn" a knob and manually edit the rest of the knobs.

Tonester...yeah, I jumped on Sonar v2 as a preorder. I don't like to get left behind on these upgrades.... ;)

I haven't jumped into control surface feature. I might check it out, though, later today. I hope to spend some studio time. I'll let you know what I find out....
