Cool Song - which is the most important part of a "mix," right? You sing well, and I REALLY like the bg vox...you're screaming your head off, full voice. Jamal Buchet (a.k.a., "The Only White Jamal In America") does that, and I think it's cool.
constructive part
1. Cymbals
The cymbals were mentioned earlier, so of course, I noticed them...LOL. You know, my drummer plays with 2 HUGE crash cymbals, and they're on opposite ends of the kit, so the panning didn't bug me so much. I think they're too loud, though.
2. Lead Vocal
You sing well, and it's gonna' kill me if I can't remember who you remind me of... Anyway, I'd ditch the chorus on the lead vocal. I hear what you're saying about fattening it up, but I'm convinced Ozzy is the only person who can effectively pull off a heavy chorus on the vocal. As a substitute, you might try actually doubling the vocal. I'm doing this on almost all of my leads now, and it helps. The trick is to make it NOT sound like it's doubled, though. So what I do is take the best vocal track, and make that my true "lead" vocal. Then I take the other one, and mix it @ 12 O'Clock, right with the first vocal, but pull the level on it down until it sounds natural (i.e., not doubled). I know it sounds ridiculous to say "mix it until you can't hear it," but it works. It fattens up the track without creating a distracting sound.
I liked the ratchet noise...what did you use for that?
Post lots,
Chris
