A newbie here ...

I'm looking to record old vinyl to mp3s.
I done some reading, but no luck. This is what I'm up to.

Componets:

Turntable
Old receiver
phono-preamp
proper cables
PC w/ sound card

I connect the turntable to phono-preamp, then preamp to phono jacks on receiver, then connect from the tape outs on the receiver to the line-in on the sound card. I'm using Audio Tools 3.01. My sound level (volume)is ok, but the sound is (for lack of a better term) "garbbled". Sounds crappy!!
If I move the preamp around in the "componet chain" I get the same results.

If I leave out the preamp, I get a good sounding "recording", but the "sound levels" are way to low.

I'm out of ideas.

Thanks for your time.

someone is gonna shoot me for this..but try the line out of the record player into the mic input of your soundcard.. you sound like you have covered all your bases..all i can think of is you missed a volume slider somewhere, and its up too high so your crackling.. did you adjust the volume correctly in the windows multimedia mixer?

Tell me what kind of phono pre amp do you have? Phonographs have to use a pre amp with the RIAA equilization curve. Without it your turntable will sound like a bad dream. Thats why you can't use the phono in for a tape deck and vise versa on a tuner.

Whooa! I just re-read your post. If you're going thru a external phono pre amp and then into the phono input of a reciever you're going thru one too many pre amps. Just use one or the other, which ever one sounds best to you.

Yes, I think you've got one too many amps in there. Try this: Turntable--->Receiver's phono in-jack, then tape out ---> the sound card. It should work.

The separate phono pre-amp may be boosting the signal into distortion. Cut it out and see if that helps.
