Vintage (Really Vintage!) Reverbs

Hi there,

we are recording our debut independently, due to low budget.
Our music has some touches of 80s's Hard, and some touches of contempory power metal, in a manner a lot of zines call our style "True Metal", but as most of it remains of classic metal bands, we just prefer calling it Heavy Metal.

One of the problems we see, is we simply can't get a good result with reverb plugins. We have tried a lot of them, D-Verb, R-Verb, RealVerb, TrueVerb and other they describe as "Vintage Reverb", but it is not what we get. All of them sound too "metallic", artificial indeed.
We have also tried a loop with a Behringer Virtualizer (not this latest 24/96 version, but a much earlier one), and it sounds still artificial.

What we are seeking is a good deep vintage reverb as the bands Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Scorpions used in the vocals, snares and guitar solos. Think you got it.

So my question is: is there a good plugin that can do the work? If not, what good 80's vintage rack modules do you suggest for looping?

Try downloading Ambiance! This is as close to a top of the line hardware unit as I have heard in a VST! (still not quite as good as some Lexicon and TC Electronic boxes, but DAMN CLOSE!!!)

Don't let the sort of "cheesy" interface fool you, this is a seriously good sounding reverb that has straight ahead controls!

While you are there, you should try out his compressor too! It doesn't have a GUI for it yet (thus, you will end of having the "stock" VST GUI), but it is a KILLER sounding compressor!
 
Hey Ford, don't you think he's gonna have a hard time trying to get a vintage sound out of a plug in? I'm thinking at least a Lex if not a Rumour. Something with a big plate.

This was my very first post, and I must confess I didn't expect an answer so quickly!

I am downloading it, and will post a reply since we have tried it.
If it works it is better, since it is a free (or almost ;) ) plugin.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions on vintage rack modules, I would appreciate.

Well, we are from the South of Brazil, what makes it very hard to find old Lexicon reverbs...
I've heard some Yamaha and Roland gears from the 80's are some good vintage reverb units.. These would be easier to find here.

What can you say about it?

+1 Kjearhus (sp?) free classic reverb. I am not saying that it is a spectacular reverb but it does have some pretty nice ones, including a preset called 80s snare or something like that.

If that doesn't work, look into convolution reverbs using the SIR 1010, it is free, and really nice sounding. Surely one of those reverb "models" will sound 80s enough for you.

Sorry about that, hehe!!

Well, I am 24 now, from 1981!
Although we still use epic themes, what is contemporary, the sound I love and hear are the 70's hard and 80's hard/heavy/thrash bands.
If you take a look back in time and see how music has changed, so you agree that 80's really vintage, hehe.
Talking seriously, I just am not able to hear this innorganic metal that is played today. "Perfect" productions and too much virtuosism.
The feeling and the punch of rock and roll is gone.
