victims of economics newbie here

just setting up the bells and whistles i'll need to get my home studio underway-reading about the neccesities for condenser mikes for vocals and the like-and just when im about to set off to buy my four tracker I come upon another problem-my keyboard-YAMAHA PSR-280-comes only with two outputs and theyre both midi outputs.
so my question then is obvious:what type cable do I need to record to an analog 4 tracker?will the sound be crummy or can I achieve good sound?can the output from the yamaha headphones be used to the line in on the four tracker?(I doubt it-lol)any ideas guys?hope to hear from you veterans out there.thx in advance.

can I record the keyboard thru some sort of mike?(which in that case)

hope I dont have to go out and buy a new keyboard-lol
 
I probably do it the wrong way, but I don't even use midi. I just mic up the keyboard and record it like I would do vocals. I don't even use an instrument mic, just the same mic that I do vocals on, and everything seems to turn out fine doing it that way. Depending on whether the room you record in is quiet or not depends on whether this is the idea for you. I get 95% of background noises off with the EQ so I've never had a reason to get midi cords or anything like that.

From what I've read on your keyboard though, it won't be possible to directly record to the 4-Track.

keep in mind the headphones output jack also is an output jack(it says phones/output)so im keeping my hopes up.its great to hear youre getting good sound from an external mike tho-so your help is very much appreciated.
I'm also wondering if anyone knows what type of mike would be the best for this type of recording and what particular mike you're using yourself.

Use the headphone jack, that is the only stereo output in that keyboard, get a stereo 1/4 cable and use it to record. Using an external mic isn't a great idea.
 
I would at least consider putting the keyboard output thru some DI boxes to get a more workable level... I had an older Casio keyboard (I know I know... but hey... I'm a guitarist. It was just for fun) that had really hot output even with the volume slider almost all the way down.
