I know I have seen threads on this in the past, yes I did a search, but it didn't yield the results I was looking for. What I want to know is if I can use the VF160 as a live mixer. My band is playing a pretty big gig soon and we are going to rent some PA stuff and I wanted to know how I could fit the VF160 in the mix so we could rent the least amount of stuff possible. Thanks a lot!

It could be done.
You only have 2 xlr inputs with the VF160 alone.

I have used mine for FOH.
I ended up using my ADA8000 (8 xlr inputs)
And I have 6 other pres for XLR inputs.
I had a total of 16 xlr inputs.
I used the 2 aux sends for monitors.

We have the 1/4 to xlr adapters. What do we need as far as power if the speakers are not powered?

You will need an amp for your mains and an amp for your monitors.

How big of a place will this be?

I would use 1 aux for the vox and guitar and bass players monitors and the other for the drummer. It might be a good idea to have the drummer on headphones.

Also make shure you set the aux sends to per fade mode or the mix in the monitors will change when the faders are moved.

The VF160 will have to be in recorde mode also.

It is an outdoor festival. It will be pretty big, but not huge. It is close to a residential area so we want to be loud, but not too loud. Should we just rent a whole PA system or try to use the fostex?

Another thing is that you would need someone to operate the Fostex, which is something else than an ordinary mixer.

We got someone I think, but we need to figure out soon what we want to rent.

Make it easy for everyone and rent a board also.

What state are you in. If your close I could do the FOH for you.

I am in California. By the way, what does FOH stand for? What kind/power of board should we be looking for?

FOH= Flaming Object Holder

He will hold your cigarette while you play. In addition, he will run into the audience and hold up a lighter when you solo. Other FOH duties may arise, a good FOH person will adapt. A great one can juggle three or more FOs, and ride a unicycle at the same time.

:p

FOH means front of house, where the mixer and the crowd are. He is offering to mix sound for you.

A set of 15" mains, a few 12" monitors, amps to run them, eqs, and a 16 channel mixer with a little reverb will go a long way, depending on the material and the expectations of the crowd and performers.

haha I like the humor... so this is what I know. We already own good monitiers. We also own some speakers, but I think we are borrowing some good ones. We have some mics, we are going to rent some mics as well. We have some cables, will probably need to rent some of those too. Can we get away with just using the VF160 with some amps? Actually I probably want to have more tracks than 8 so.... still got to figure all this out... any more tips are great.. thanks!

i wouldn't use the vf160, personally. i always end up having to do a lot of gain with mine if i don't use a preamp. i'd prefer an analog board just for ease of use, personally. but if i really had to get by i guess it would do

I think we will rent something... we wanted to try to save money, but we want to have quality stuff...
