Very strange latency problem

I am using a dynamic mic into an M-Audio Pre into a Soundblaster Live24bit soundcard into Adobe Audition.

I am however suffering from latency on the recording meaning that when recorded they are not 'on beat' despite having been sung that way. Have I messed up my settings or is it cause the mic's not phantom powered or something?
 
well 1.5 and later dosn't support ASIO so you are probably using WDM drivers which sometimes have latency...

What version of audition are you on.

get the latest drivers for your card.

the live card is not made for audio recording...I personally would get another card.
 
1st off you don't need phantom power for a dynamic mic

2nd, a soundblaster is aimed at audio playback, not recording. Even with a system with top end spec you will still have high latency with that card.

Latency is a combination of your soundcard and the specs of your computer. Something like the M-Audio Delta 44 soundcard lets you monitor the input through any of the outputs on the card before it even hits your software but you'll need a small mixer or a headphone amp to take advantage of this feature.
 
Lemon Tree, how would being able to monitor the sound before it goes to your card reduce the latency problem?

Because there is no playback latency. Latency reffers to the time it takes for a signal to hit your soundcard, be processed and sent back out again. With soundcards with zero latency routing like the M-Audio stuff (cheapest I could think of to get the job done) your signal is being returned BEFORE it gets into your recording software and before any AD/DA conversion has taken place
 
Briliant, JUST the response I needed. Looks like I best buy a new soundcard then!
 
LemonTree again: well, I still don't understand. I recently bought a Delta 44 card and upgraded to XP. I'm still using Cool Edit 2.1 though, and near as I can tell, there's still latency when I'm recording. When I overdub, the track I'm recording doesn't start at absolute zero, it always starts milliseconds later. It's a lot more than the 5 ms indicated on the soundcard setting, too, I think.

have you got the "correct for drift" box checked?

Ed if you are looking for a cheep audio card that works great I would suggest the EMU0404 or M-audio Audiophile...

I have and use the EMU0404 myself.
 
Ok cool, will check those two out as well; thanks.

I'm thinking right now though that the Delta 44 card with the v67 mic are the best way forward for what I need.

Nope. I've got the 'Correct for sync start' box checked. I thought that would do it. I'll try the 'correct for drift' thing and see how it works. Thanks for the idea. :)

Are you guys talking about all versions or one particular?
I did not know what latency is until I bought AA 2,0.

I run 4 avi files with effects together in A. Premier and everything works pretty fine which means my PC is strong and fast enough.

It is something about ASIO drivers settings.
I was running Audition 2,0 with windows drivers for a while. It worked but I really wanted those ASIO drivers to work out for me.

Soon I'll get a new audio card. I'm sure problems are going to disappear.
Does it mean that my SB Live card can't work with ASIO drivers or what?
