So I just got the audio from my mixer into my soundcard. But how do I get Reaper to record the music? I can it hear it playing but when I record and playback it's blank?

Arm the track for recording by hitting the AR button, then hit the circular record button in the transport controls.

I guess it would appear that I also need a preamp besides my Mixer? I can hear the music I recorded now, but it's so low I can barely make it out

Your mixer has preamps. There are so many things that can be going wrong here, you gotta give more information about what equipment you are using. Post some of your details (what are you trying to record, what microphone(s) are you using, or are you recording direct, what is your interface, do you mean you are using an analog mixer into your computer soundcard?).

As of now, I have not bought any equipment so I'm using the stuff I've had for some time to get an idea of what software I will be using for editing, and Reaper looks pretty easy.. Thus far I'm using a Yamaha MG10/2 Mixer and a cheap Phillips Dynamic mic. No preamp and no interface. Plugging into the PC Soundcard (I know this is not best, for I will be upgrading in about a week (payday)). But before that day comes I want to get an idea of what I want to buy.. New PC with interface or MTR..

But besides the equipment I will buy I already have another thread about this. I'm just curious if I need a preamp.. This mic is not using XLR nor Phantom power.. Reason probably? It's not getting that extra 40 watts

Hope this helps

Dynamic mics need a lot of gain so that is probably part of the problem.
Checking Reaper out myself right now on the family PC.
Pretty neat program.
Think I'll bring my Keyrig upstairs and see if Reaper has any virtual instruments.
I like what I see so far though.
I loaded a bunch of Wave files on.
They lined up perfectly, of course.
Dragging them around, adding effects, splitting and undoing etc.. all very intuitive.
Boy, it seemed so complicated when I looked at it a couple of years ago. :D

I use a Edirol UA-4FX external USB audio with Reaper. It works great with Reaper, and comes bundled with SONAR LE.

My PC hangs with SONAR, but I can use the DX plugins with Reaper. Cakewalks Tape Sim is great, you can use it to add warmth to any track.

I got it working.. The issue was very simple actually. I forgot that a long time ago I put everything on mute. So in my sounds and audio devices (control pannel); I had my mic and eveything else on mute except for the speakers. Once I took off the mute everything started working.
